Y Gwyll (English: The Dusk), known in English by the name Hinterland, is a police detective drama series broadcast on S4C in Welsh and later in English, with brief passages of Welsh dialogue, on BBC One Wales. When it was aired on the BBC in 2014, it was the first BBC television drama with dialogue in both English and Welsh.[1]

The main character, DCI Tom Mathias, is played by Richard Harrington.[2] On 27 November 2013, a second series was announced by S4C.[3]

Cast

Production

The series reflected the commitment made in April 2013 by the Director of BBC Cymru Wales, Rhodri Talfan Davies, to show more Welsh language life and culture on the mainstream BBC channels.[1]

On a tight budget—taking two and a half years to raise the funds—the total production cost was £4.2 million.[4] The programme makers received £215,000 in repayable business funding from the Welsh Government. The programme was mainly filmed in Aberystwyth and the surrounding Ceredigion region on the west coast of Wales, taking place over a 124 day period in 2013. The show was filmed in both Welsh and English, with the location-based production offices contained within the former Ceredigion Council offices Swyddfa'r Sir, which also acts as the external scene of the show's police station.

The Welsh version was broadcast (in eight parts) on S4C in October 2013, with the bilingual version (in four parts) broadcast on BBC One Wales in January 2014 and on BBC Four later that year.[5]

The broadcaster which produced The Killing, Danmarks Radio (DR), acquired the rights in 2012 to broadcast the show in Denmark,[6] noticeably before filming had even commenced.[1]

Broadcasts

  • Wales: The Welsh-language version of the series premiered on S4C on 29 October 2013.
  • Wales: A bilingual version premiered on BBC One Wales on 4 January 2014.
  • United Kingdom: The bilingual version was screened UK-wide on BBC Four in 2014, with the first episode on 28 April.[7]
  • Denmark: DR broadcast the bilingual version, with the title "Mord i Wales", on 12, 19 and 26 May and 2 June 2014.
  • Norway: NRK premiered the bilingual version on 11 April 2014.
  • The Netherlands: KRO premiered the bilingual version on 20 May 2014.
  • Belgium: the Flemish public broadcasting organization VRT started airing the Welsh-language version on 14 July 2014.[8]
  • Finland: YLE premiered the bilingual version, with the title "Syrjäinen maa", on 12 October 2014[9]
  • Slovenia: The bilingual version premiered on RTVSLO, their public broadcaster on 14 April 2014, with the title "Zločini v Walesu" (Crimes in Wales). The 4-part first series continued on 21, 28 April and 5 May respectively. The first series was repeated the following year in April and May.[10]
  • A German-dubbed version, with the title Inspector Mathias – Mord in Wales, started on German television Das Erste on July 12, 2015.[11]

On-demand streaming service Netflix streams the series online across North America.[12]

Set in a background of long-standing family feuds over land, DCI Mathias is returned to front line duty to investigate an arson attack at an isolated farmhouse that has left a mother and child critically injured.

Series 2 (2015)

A second series will air on S4C in autumn 2015 starting 13 Sep. Filming took place in Ceredigion in September 2014.[15]

A feature-length one-off special aired on S4C on 1 January 2015,[16] it was later aired on BBC One Wales on 6 April 2015,[17] and made available on BBC iPlayer.

On January 24, 2015, Debbie Moon announced on Twitter she was writing an episode for the second series.[18]

Reception

The Times gave the show a rating of four stars out of five.[19]

Ratings

The first episode of Hinterland, broadcast on BBC One Wales, attracted 350,000 viewers, making it the most watched programme in Wales at the time.[20] The first episode was later aired nationwide on BBC Four on 28 April 2014 to an audience of 789,000.[21] Episodes 2–4 were watched by 668,000, 566,000 and 663,000 viewers respectively.
