Mauro Germán Serra Camoranesi (born October 4, 1976 in Tandil, Argentina) is a Italo-Argentinian football midfielder, who currently plays for Juventus, recently demoted to Serie B.

Camoranesi is a member of the Italy national football team and was part of the winning squad at the 2006 World Cup.

History

Club

As a youngster, Camoranesi played in his native country Argentina for Aldosivi, but moved to Mexico to begin his professional playing career at Santos Laguna. During the 1996-97 season, he scored 8 goals in 22 games for the team.

More travels came for the young Argentine the following year, as he moved to Uruguayan club Montevideo Wanderers briefly. Before returning back to his homeland to play for Banfield, solidifying himself as an impressive attacking right midfielder, playing 38 games and scoring 16 goals.

The following season once again, Camoranesi moved. This time back to Mexico and to the club Cruz Azul, he played for the club between 1998 and 2000. This is where he caught the attention of Italian Serie A side Hellas Verona, after impressing at Cruz Azul with 32 goals in 78 games, a respectable record for a midfield player.

He moved to Italy in 2000, with Hellas Verona playing for the club for two years, before moving to Italian giants Juventus in 2002, where he remains and is a prominent member of the squad.

Camoranesi won with Juventus the 2002-03, 2004-05 and 2005-06 editions of Serie A, and the 2002 and 2003 Italian Super Cup.

International

Camoranesi had the opportunity to play for Italy because of his Italian ancestors, so he decided to play for the Azzurri, instead of his native Argentina, as he had no chance with the then Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa.

His first game for the Italian national team was a friendly against Portugal (February 2 2003, Genoa) and later he was part of the team at Template:Ec2. When he accepted Trapattoni's offer to play for Italy instead of waiting to be called to play for Argentina he said: "I'm not a traitor, I still feel one hundred per cent Argentine and have done nothing to find myself in this situation. It's only a football matter, nothing else". For Italy he has played twenty-six matches, scoring one goal.

On July 9th 2006 he was one of the players who won Italy's 4th World Cup. After the game he had his long black hair cut off before his side collected the trophy. When the TV camera approximated him in the middle of the field, he dedicated the world championship in Spanish "... para los pibes del barrio ..." (for the guys in the neighbourhood) [2]
