Yoiking with the Winged Ones is a polyphonic sound project by Ánde Somby.[1] In the recording, Somby performs yoiking, the ancient chanting practise of the Sámi People of northern Europe,[2][3] in concert with the sounds of nature.[4] The album edition of the project was released by Ash International as a vinyl record in January 2016.[5]

The project is performed and produced by Ánde Somby, an artist deeply rooted in the yoik tradition. In this project, Somby contributes to the tradtion of yoik with pretty epressive style of yoiking.[6]

There are four tracks on the recording.[7]

  1. Gufihttar
  2. Gádni
  3. Neahkkameahttun
  4. Wolf

Track 1, 2 and 3 are composed by Somby and track 4 is traditional.[8] There are no lyrics. That is not uncommon.

The recordings and post production were by Chris Watson, a sound artist and sound recordist from Newcastle upon Tyne. The sampling of sounds took place in Kvalnes, Lofoten in June 2014.

Yoiking with the Winged Ones has 12 reviews. There are both reviews in Sombys native language Sámi[9] as well as in Danish[10] and Norwegian.[11] The album is reviewed also in Italian,[12] German,[13][14] Dutch,[15] Japanese[16] and English.[17] [18][19]

According to PassiveAggressive he is almost on the border of the human voice[clarification needed].[20] Somby's yoiking has been described as having the energy that punk rock had before it was tamed in the music studios,[21] with Klassekampen comparing Somby's work to that of the English punk band Cockney Rejects.[22]

The artist A K Dolven, living in Kvalnes and London has been instrumental and important in developing the concept, and produced the album's cover art.[23] The production was supported by the Sami Parliament of Norway.[24]

The title references stories about the mythology of faeries and elves, and the recording was inspired by the Arctic climate.
