Hardcore Henry (also known simply as Hardcore)[2] is a 2015 Russian-American science fiction action film written and directed by Ilya Naishuller. The film stars Sharlto Copley, Danila Kozlovsky, Haley Bennett, and Tim Roth. It is scheduled to be released theatrically by STX Entertainment on April 8, 2016.

Plot

Hardcore Henry is a first person action film in which the audience sees everything through the eyes of Henry, a man resurrected from the brink of death as a cybernetic super-soldier who remembers nothing about his past. He is trying to save his wife Estelle, who has been kidnapped by Akan, a powerful warlord with a plan for bio-engineering soldiers. In the unfamiliar city of Moscow, Henry tries to avoid being killed while discovering the truth behind his identity.[3][4]

Cast

Production

Hardcore Henry was shot almost entirely on the GoPro Hero 3 camera, using a specially-built rig worn like a mask.[5][6] The concept for the film came from the short videos "The Stampede" and "Bad Motherfucker" which Naishuller had directed and which were also shot on a GoPro from the first person perspective.[6]

Release

The film premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2015.[7][8] The film became one of the highest-profile at the festival, and led to a bidding war between Lionsgate, Universal, and STX Entertainment. Ultimately, STX acquired worldwide rights to Hardcore, including a wide release commitment, for $10 million, becoming the studio's first festival acquisition.[9] It was retitled Hardcore Henry for its domestic release.[3] At the festival, the film won the Grolsch People's Choice Midnight Madness Award.[10] The film is scheduled to be released on April 8, 2016, by STX Entertainment.[4]

Critical response

During its run at film festivals in 2015, review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a rating of 94% based on 17 reviews, with an average rating of 6.5/10.[11] Metacritic gave the film a score of 55 out of 100, based on 6 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[12]
