Sonic Mania is a platform video game developed by Sega, Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games and published by Sega. The game is part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series and emulates the gameplay and 2D sprite animation of the original Sega Genesis games. The game was announced on July 22, 2016 and will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows in Q2 2017.[1]

Gameplay

Emulating the style of the original games released for the Sega Genesis, Sonic Mania is a 2D side-scrolling platform game in which players control either Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles as they race through various levels. The game's levels are comprised of remixed levels from past games, such as Green Hill Zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as brand new stages. Along with classic moves such as the Spin Attack and Spin Dash, Mania introduces a new move called the Drop Dash, which allows the player to instantly dash into a rolling Spin Attack in either direction upon landing from a jump.[1] The game will also feature the elemental shields featured in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and giant rings leading to Special Stages.

Development

Sonic Mania was first announced alongside Project Sonic 2017 during a presentation held by Sega during San Diego Comic Con on July 22, 2016. The development team includes Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley, who previously developed the 2011 enhanced port of Sonic the Hedgehog CD along with mobile ports of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2.[2]
