The Magnificent Seven is an upcoming American western action film directed by Antoine Fuqua, and written by Nic Pizzolatto and Richard Wenk. A remake of the 1960 western film of the same name, which in turn was a remake of the 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai, the film stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Peter Sarsgaard and Haley Bennett.

Principal photography began on May 18, 2015, in the north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The film is set to premiere on September 8, 2016 at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and to be released in the United States in conventional and IMAX theatres on September 23, 2016.

Premise

As the town Rose Krick is put under the siege of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, the residents enlist the help of seven outlaws, headed by bounty hunter Sam Chisolm, to protect them while they prepare for the anticipated violent confrontation. However, upon meeting the town's residents, the Seven find themselves fighting for much more than money.

The film was reported to be in the planning stages in 2012, with Tom Cruise starring. It was reported that Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, and Matt Damon might join the film.[4] On December 4, 2014, Chris Pratt was in early talks to join Washington in the film.[5] On February 20, 2015, Haley Bennett was set to star as the widow of a man who was murdered, and she hires seven bounty hunters to get revenge.[6] Peter Sarsgaard joined on May 20, 2015, to play the villain role in the film.[7] On the same day, Deadline.com's Mike Fleming Jr. confirmed that Jason Momoa had left the film because he was already booked to play Aquaman.[8] On July 11, 2015, the Daily Mirror reported that Vinnie Jones had been set to star in the film.[9]

Music

James Horner was pegged to write the film's score, but died on June 22, 2015. In July 2015, nearly a month after Horner's death, Fuqua learned that Horner had already starting working on music for the film before filming commenced.[10] Horner's friend and score producer Simon Franglen, co-composed the score after Horner's death, which will be released by Sony Classical.[11] As such, the score will be the third and final Horner score to be released posthumously.

Filming

Principal photography on the film lasted 64 days, from March 18 to August 18, 2015, in the north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.[12][13][14] Other locations include St. Francisville and Zachary, Louisiana.[13][14] Filming in St. Francisville was completed between May 18 and May 29, 2015.[15]

Release

The film will have its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2016.[16][17] It will also serve as the closing night film at the Venice Film Festival on September 9.[18] The film was initially set to be released on January 13, 2017.[19] However, in August 2015, Sony Pictures Entertainment moved the film up for a release on September 23, 2016.[20]
