Theresia Gouw is an entrepreneur and venture capital investor in the technology sector. She worked at Bain & Company, Release Software and Accel Partners before co-founding Aspect Ventures, a female-led VC firm, in 2014[1]. Gouw was named one of the 40 most influential minds in tech by TIME Magazine.[2] and has been recognized five times on the Forbes Midas List as one of the "world's smartest tech investors".[3][4][5][6][7]

Early life and education

Theresia Gouw was born in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1968. Her father was an orthodontist and her mother, a nurse. Her family immigrated to the U.S. when she was three years old. Gouw liked math and science in school, and her parents expected her to study medicine. She disliked blood and dissection so chose to study engineering instead.[8][9] Gouw earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Brown University, graduating magna cum laude.[10] She earned an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1994.[11]

Career

Early career

Gouw began her career at Bain & Company. She worked in the Boston office after graduating from Brown, and in the San Francisco office after graduate school. Gouw left Bain in 1996 to become a founding member of Release Software, a startup founded by business school classmates.[1] She served as VP of Business Development & Sales.

Accel Partners

In 1999, Gouw joined Accel Partners as an Associate and became a Managing Partner in 2003. She was with the firm for 15 years. Her investments included Trulia (TRLA), Imperva (IMPV), LearnVest, JasperDesign, and Kozmix.[12]

Aspect Ventures

In 2014, Gouw co-founded Aspect Ventures with fellow venture capital investor Jennifer Fonstad[13]. Gouw and Fonstad worked together early in their careers at Bain & Company and at Release Software[1]. During the first year, Aspect Ventures made several Series A and Seed investments funded by the co-founders' personal capital. In May, 2015, Aspect announced it had raised its first $150MM fund, which included outside capital from Limited Partners[14]. The firm has made investments in companies including Cato Networks[15], Exabeam[16], the Muse[17], and Chime[18]

Board member and advisor

Gouw sits on the board of directors of several of the companies she has invested in, including Selfscore, Cato Networks, ForeScout Technologies, Exabeam and The Muse. She serves as Treasurer and is a Trustee on the Brown University Corporation Board[10]. She serves as vice-chair of the board of DonorsChoose[19], and is a member of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Advisory Council[20]. She also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Castilleja School[21]
