This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Nel85 (talk | contribs) at 11:17, 26 January 2017 (I added a reference to the page which describes what is important in cold email campaigns, what is it and the main steps of organising this type of campaigns. Thanks to it users of wikipedia can improve their knowledge of this topic.). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

A cold email is an unsolicited e-mail that is sent to a receiver without prior contact or a request for information previously.[1][2] It could also be defined as the email equivalent of cold calling.[3] Cold emails are different from spam mails.[4] If some proper procedures are not followed, a cold email could become a spam mail.[5][6]

History

Door to door salesmen were popular before cold calling became a major form of marketing.[7] With the internet revolution and the popularity of emails, cold emails became popular.[4][1]

Rules & Regulations

United States

The United States has email regulations for business owners developed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).[8] The FTC has an act called the CAN-SPAM Act for regulating email practices of businesses.[9] Issues like “deceptive subject lines”, “opt out requests”, “header information” and others are discussed.[6][10] Violation of the CAN-SPAM Act could lead to fines of up to $16,000.[11][3]
