Nitro Nation Online (alternatively referred to as Nitro Nation Racing or abbreviated to NN) is a racing game, developed by Creative Mobile for Android, iOS, Windows Phone and Samsung devices. The game was first announced on September 17, 2013 as Beta preview.[5] On April 3, 2014 the Beta was completed and a full release of Nitro Nation Online was launched on Google Play[6].

The game features 138 officially licensed cars (60 street class and 78 race class) from 27 international car manufacturers including BMW, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Subaru and Volkswagen.

The game economy is based on the freemium model with two currencies in game, credits called 'Cash' and a premium currency called 'Gold'. Both Cash and Gold can be purchased using real money from the in-app store. Cash is the common game currency, it is used for event fees, purchases and car maintenance. Cash can be earned as a reward for competing in races, won in prize crates or by in-app purchase. Gold is the currency used for premium options like car customization, purchasing upgraded car packages, extra activation of Crew members and purchasing blueprints from the market. Gold can be earned by selling unwanted blueprints on the Market and or by in-app purchase.

Gameplay

When players begin the game, they drive a BMW M4 GTS through a basic racing tutorial of how and when to shift. They then able to choose from a Subaru_BRZ, Alfa Romeo GT 3.2 V6, Ford Focus or VW Golf GTI as a starting car. The game is divided into 2 areas of play, Career and Multiplayer.

Career

Career Mode

Career mode is a single player event, which contains tutorials and unlocks game features as the game progresses. Career mode consists of 8 tiers of competition, each tier features 10 race competitors increasing in difficulty. At the end of each tier the player will race against a 'Boss' to collect a large reward and be prompted to purchase a car from the next tier. Each tier represents a class of car models:

Practice

Practice is a single player event, restricted to D and C class cars. The player will compete against an opponent who is much weaker than they are.

Drivers Battle

The Drivers Battle is a single player event, where players race a randomly selected opponent’s car.

Currently the Toyo Tires race series, a single player event that features a 5 stage race with a focus on reaction time.

Underground Tournament

The Underground Tournament is a single player event that allows players to choose their opponent among four randomly selected opponents and compete for prizes over a series of 10 races. The Underground Tournament features a 5-stage racing timing light countdown with a reaction-time launch button. When starting the Underground Tournament the player starts with 3 tickets, each time they lose a race they lose 1 ticket, if they lose all 3 tickets they are eliminated from the event. The Underground Tournament also features a number of premium 'booster' options (Race Fuel increases engine power, Illegal Tires gives better grip, Extra Bottle gives more N2O and Delay Box gives an instant launch). After the 6th race and each subsequent race, players receive a bonus item for each win they achieve.

Race Club Tournament

During the 3rd tier of Career Mode, players are prompted to choose between 4 Racing Clubs (Dead Aces, Road Cruisers, The Winds, Tough Guys). The Race Club tournament is a series of 5 races, where players earn cash rewards and Race Club points to increase their ranking within the Race Club. Each week top club players get an additional 100% bonus points, the 2nd place club gets 50%, 3rd place club gets 25% and the 4th place team gets no bonus.

Live Multiplayer

Live Multiplayer is an event with players competing in live synchronous 1/4 or 1/2 mile racing matches based on car ranking.

Reception

Aggregate review website GameRankings assigned a score of 75/100 based on reviews from 2 critics.[7]

Media reception to Nitro Nation Online has been generally positive, Pocket Gamer giving it a rating of 7/10, remarking that "It's almost dangerously simple to pick up and play, and that desire to shave seconds off your time becomes habit-forming in a few plays."[8]

PocketMeta offered mixed criticism with a combined total score of 22/25, praising "Nitro Nation Online is a beautiful drag racing game with a vibrant online community that will make you jealous of the luxurious cars of the best of the crop on the leader boards. Very rich gallery of customization options and achievements create addictive and rewarding game play while competing against other players allows you to feel a sense of belonging to the drag racing community." and deriding "...loading times and the difficulty of upgrading without resorting to in-app purchases. Other than that, it’s a must-have item on your Android tablet."[9]

This sentiment is backed up by GameZone which giving an 8.5/10 rating, states "Fast and addictive gameplay makes for a fun gameplay experience, while the fast customization options add a layer of addiction to the game. Racing with other players and climbing the leader boards is by far the game’s best aspect for me." Losing some ratings due to "Having to lose a few races every time just to gain some money to upgrade and progress further makes the game feel like a grind and this is compounded with loading times that exceed gameplay time. That being said, the game is still the most addictive and fun racing game I have played on my mobile gaming device and is sure to give players countless hours of fun."[10]
