Alaka Das (অলকা দাশ)[3] is a famous artist of classical music of Bangladesh born in Comilla in 1946. Her father was a classical music maestro Pandit Surendra Narayan Das (সুরেন্দ্র নারায়ণ দাশ)[4] (1908-1986) popularly known as Pandit Suren Das.[5][6] Pandit Suren das was a disciple of Ustaad Alauddin Khan. From father, Alaka learnt all the knowledge of classical music. Her uncle is Sudhin Das [7] from whom she learnt Nazrul Sangeet. Her younger brother Manas Kumar Das [8][9] is also a prominent singer of Nazrul Sangeet in Bangladesh.

Alaka Das started her professional music career by enlisting in Bangladesh Betar during 1965.[10] Her enlistment number in Bangladesh Betar is 1010002.[11] Later, she enlisted in Bangladesh Television during 1967. Till present she is enlisted in both this media as a Senior Artist of classical music and Nazrul Sangeet. Since 1986, she is acting as a Principal of Sangeet Shikhharthee Sammilan (সঙ্গীত শিক্ষার্থী সম্মিলন),[12] one the oldest music school in Bangladesh. Sangeet Shikhharthee Sammilan[13] was established by Pandit Suren das during 1942 in Comilla.

This music family of Comilla is well known in the music arena of Bangladesh. This music family's contribution is briefly prescribed in chapter 2 of page number 87-88 and 102 of a research paper named Forms and styles of Hindustani music in Bangladesh special reference to khayal and thumri in context of gayaki and tantakari[14] published 17 December 2015 conducted by Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.

  • During 2015, she published a book of classical music named Raag Manjori (রাগ মঞ্জরী).[15]
  • During 2011, She published the music book Raag Manjusha[16] as a co-editor along with her brother Manas Kumar Das. This book was written by her father Pandit Suren das.

Personal life

Alaka Das married Mr. Priti Ranjan Roy during August,1986. Mr Priti Ranjan Roy is a retired professor of Mathematics of Puran Bazar Degree College,[17]Chandpur.
