Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque
The Ibn Ruschd-Goethe mosque is the first liberal mosque in Berlin, Germany, which opened in 2017. Burqa and niquab is banned. The mosque was founded by Seyran Ateş a German lawyer and feminist, it is open for Sunni, Shia and other Muslims. Both men and women pray together in the mosque and women aren't forced to wear a headscarf. It is the first mosque of its kind in Germany and one of the first in Europe and the entire world. Experts are seeing the mosque as groundbreaking in gender identity and equality in Islam.[1][2][3][4] Ates told Der Spiegel that “no one will be let in with a niqab or burqa veil. This is for security reasons and also it is our belief that full-face veils have nothing to do with religion, but rather are a political statement.” She told the journalists that she was inspired by Wolfgang Schäuble, the German Minister of Finance, who told her that liberal Muslims should band together[5][6]
Reactions
Turkish mass media display the Ruschd-Goethe mosque as part of the Gülen movement. There is in general a harsh tone against the mosque in Turkey.[7]
