A General, A Scholar, and A Eunuch (Traditional Chinese: 超時空男臣; literally "Time-Travelling Male Official") is a 2017 Hong Kong television costume historical, science fiction comedy drama produced by Marco Law for TVB, starring Edwin Siu, Kristal Tin, Raymond Cho, Grace Wong and Matthew Ho as the main cast. It premiered on Hong Kong's TVB Jade and Malaysia's Astro On Demand on July 17, 2017 airing Monday through Friday during its 8:30 to 9:30 pm timeslot and concluding August 27, 2017 with a total of 32 episodes.[1]

A General, A Scholar, and A Eunuch is a historical fiction comedy about three Ming dynasty imperial officials who accidentally travel to modern day Mainland China by accident while searching for a missing princess. The character names of the three male leads are taken from actual historical Chinese figures Yuan Chonghuan, Zuo Zongtang and Li Jinzhong, however the characters portrayed in the drama does not have any relations to the actual person and is portrayed fictionally.

Synopsis

A General Yuan Chonghuan (Edwin Siu), A Scholar Zuo Guangdou (Raymond Cho), and A Eunuch Li Junchong (Matthew Ho) are Ming Dynasty imperial officials that accidentally went through a time portal while escaping assassins during their mission of escorting the betrothal Crown Princess (Grace Wong). In the current modern time, the three find themselves at an ancient filming set which confuses them from reality and fiction. After seeing smug actress Sandy Wang Yi-san (Grace Wong), who resembles their missing Princess, in images the trio mistakes her as their Princess and sets out to find her. The three works as film extras and stunt doubles in order to survive. Failing Restaurant owner Jackie Fung Wai-chi befriends and tricks the three that she can help them find their princess but makes them sign workers contracts that forces the trio to become low paying workers while also offering them room and broad. However Jackie's restaurant becomes popular and successful when she finds out Junchong can cook. With the success of the restaurant, the trio gives them selves new names. Chonghuan becomes Wan Tai-kwan, Guangdou becomes Fung Yat-bo and Junchong becomes Li Siu-tung. As rival restaurants starts to take notice on Jackie and the trio's success they try to lure Siu-tung to work for them. Tai-kwan helping Jackie through this rough patch in her business the two start to fall in love.

However Guangdou/Yat-bo has been investigating Sandy Wang Yi-san's background and also reading through China's history. He finds out what will happen if the trio goes back to Ming Dynasty. As the longer the trio stays in modern day China they finding harder wanting to go back to their actual timeline.

Development and production

  • The costume fitting ceremony was held on October 4, 2016 12:30 pm at Tseung Kwan O TVB City Studio One Common Room.[2]
  • The blessing ceremony was held on October 31, 2015 3:00 pm at Tseung Kwan O TVB City Studio.[3]
  • Filming took place from October 2016 till February 2017, on location in Hong Kong and Foshan China.
  • Rosina Lam was originally cast as the Princess character, but turned it down due to her busy personal schedule. Grace Wong was then cast in the part.[4]
