In late February 2016, Vishal announced that he would produce and act in a fantasy film to be directed by Mysskin. Vishal revealed that he would work on the project instead of Linguswamy's Sandakozhi 2 and that the shoot would begin in May 2016 after the completion of Marudhu (2016).[1] The film was launched in mid-March 2016 with the title Thupparivaalan.[2] Prasanna says that, his role in Thupparivaalan is like Dr Watson of Sherlockhomes series.[3] It is reported that this movie does not have any songs except for theme music.[4]

Rakul Preet Singh left the film after having schedule clashes with other films and was replaced by actress Anu Emmanuel.[5] Likewise Akshara Haasan left the film and was replaced by Andrea Jeremiah due to date issues. One minute-long teaser of the movie was released on July 19, 2017.[6] Following Bairavaa, Singam 3 and Vivegam, Thupparivaalan is also planned to release on a Thursday, which is 14 September 2017.
