A bag of Kuai Kuai is next to a desktop PC. Some people believes that if the snack is placed around the server, it will bless the machine to run smoothly.

The Kuai Kuai culture is a phenomenon in Taiwan to put the brand snack "Kuai Kuai" next to machines. The people who do this believe that as the name of the snack "Kuai Kuai" stands for "obedient" or "well-behaved", so it will make the device functions properly. The Kuai Kuai should not be expired, and the bags should only be the green ones, if other flavors such as yellow or red bags may even lead to counter effects. And no matter how hungry you are, you shall not open the snack to consume, or the device may go wrong. Influenced by the culture, Kuai Kuai is the only food that one may bring into a server room, and is widely placed on the top or inside of factory production lines, computer mainframes, computer rooms, intensive care centers, data centers, ATMs, police stations, ticket booths, and satellite models.

Culture influence

Kuai Kuai Company Limitedis established in 1968. The company produces mainly cookies and puff corn snacks. Kuai Kuai is also the snack with the same name as the company.[1] It is a puff corn product. It was as documented as early as 2008, the idea of "put Kuai Kuai next to a device to bless the equipment works properly".[2] The idea is not only the informal convention of the information industry in Taiwan, but it also expands to other fields of industries.[3] Kuai Kuai is now placed next to the devices of server rooms, ATMs[4][5][6][7], ticket booths[8], control systems[9], toll booth[10]. Also it was seen in places such as a computer center[11], a social affairs bureau[12], an architecture of sustainability[13], a police station[14], a hospital[15], a office of nursing, Center of domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, a cutting room, a theater[8], household registration offices [16]and examination hall for national tests[17]. It is also the rare cases of food that one can bring to a computer room.[11][18][3]

The culture is seen by some people as superstition, but some others believe it whole-heartedly.[19][20] "I write my name (on the bag) and I am not fooling around.", the movie director Chi Po-lin once even stated.[8] However, the vice professor of Taipei City University of Science and Technology Jiang Tsan-Teng(江燦騰) points out the stable system from Kuai Kuai may be a coincidence, the snack is only a placebo for the staff.[10]

Convention

Three different flavors of Kuai Kuai, from the left to the right are five spiced (yellow), coconut milk (green), and chocolate (red). It is said that only the green one that is "effective".

The way to place Kuai Kuai is rather rigid, because the indication light of no error is green, the snack bag should be only the green one(coconut flavor) then yellow or red ones which represents abnormality. [21][22][23] For instance, in May 2017 when the season of collecting consolidated income taxes, Ministry of Finance in Taiwan tried to place Kuai Kuai to save the overwhelmed operational system due to overload access. [24] However, they bought the yellow cover bag and was criticized by the netizen in Taiwan.[25] The congress person of Kuomintang Lu Shiow-Yen(盧秀燕) also mentioned this to the Ministry of Finance when reviewing drafts of acts that the Ministry shall keep up with the convention and not make mistakes with the color of the bag.[26] On the other side, the snack company propose another theory: green bags are for electronic devices and computer rooms. Yellow bags stands for gold and fortunes, so it is more welcome in financial and banking industry. The red bags stands for love, so the company sell limited coverage when in Valentine's Day or Mother's Day.[25]

One shall be aware of not only the color difference but also the expiration date. One shall not place expired Kuai Kuai, it shall be replaced immediately if it is over the expiration data.[25] One shall also watch if the bag is damaged in case the interior food is consumed by cockroaches or mice.[8] One shall not consume the snack or replace it at will. There are news in Taiwan that the abnormality or accidents happened due to the snacks was eaten by people. [27][28][29][30]

Partnerships

The five spiced flavored Kuai Kuai on a conveyer belt, it is hoped to bless the productivity by lowering the malfunction of the equipment, however it may cause counter-effect by placing the yellow Kuai Kuai.

The location of placing Kuai Kuai is often related to the machinary equipments, so it is seen to be a part of Supply chain in the information industry in Taiwan.[31] In 2016, the earthquake in Kaosiung damaged the production line of TSMC in Southern Taiwan Science Park, and the TSMC engineers ordered special edition of Kuai Kuai after they repaired the production line to the company staff. On the bag it is customized printed "FAB14A 222K limited edition" (FAB14A 222K限定) and the mascot of the factory Black-faced spoonbill, the limited edition bag was once on the internet with 20 times higher of the ordinary price of the same amount of snacks. After the event, other information companies also come to Kuai Kuai company for custom made edition.[32][31] For example, Microsoft in Taiwan has collaborated with Kuai Kuai as the special edition of the "Peacock rice puff" (孔雀香酥脆)[33]; in March 2017, Taoyuan Airport MRT was opened, the MRT made 60,000 green bags that print "Just take the MRT, it saves time" (乖乖搭捷運,省時又快捷) to general publics[34][1][35]; Chung-Hua Bank also collaborate with Kuai Kuai to produce golden bags of five spiced flavor.[36][37]

In June 2017, the German theme park Europa-Park announced the opening of a flying theater "VOLETARIUM", Kuai Kuai snacks was placed in the center of the press conference stage. The park introduce the snack particularly stated "it's a extra ordinary tradition from Taiwan", the company, which is [40]
