François Gall (March 22, 1912– December 9, 1987) was a Hungarian-born Impressionist painter who spent most of his life in France, after moving there in 1936.

Early life

Francois Gall was born in Kolozsvár, Hungary. He moved to France in 1936. Gall was first taught by Aurel Popp at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts - Workshop Coromaldi in Rome and subsequently joined the Collegium Hungaricum (equivalent to Villa Medici), before traveling to Europe on a scholarship to hone his talents as a sculptor, ceramicist, designer, painter, and portraitist. His work included Roman and Hungarian families, bystanders and onlookers, friends, musicians, singers, street scenes of markets and caravans circuses street.

The first exhibition of his work was in 1932 at the Gallery Moderna in Rome.

Early in 1939, he was recalled to Kolosvàr because of his dying father, but he could not return to France as the declaration of war was imminent. Liberated by the Allies in Wels in Austria, where had become a medical director and caregiver (demonstrated by a moving letter signed by many Jews with typhus ), he was finally repatriated to Paris, returning to his attic on 16 Dauphine Street. He resumed his artistic activities and, on the banks of the Pont Neuf, met his bride, a young woman from Quercy. Eugenie Chassaing would give him three children who would become three future models: Lize-Marie (1947), Jean-François (1948), Elizabeth - Anne (1956 - the year of the Budapest uprising). Eugenie died in 1980 in a serious car accident, leaving the artist destroyed.

In 1947 - the year of the bread crisis - he received a Gold Medal for his canvas "bread for the people", a highlight of French Artists (4000 works and 800 exhibitors) the title of an article in France-Soir.
