Biography

Di Maio enrolled at the University of Naples Federico II to study engineering, but subsequently changed to jurisprudence. While never graduating from his studies, he was among the founders of students' unions at both faculties. In 2007 he obtained registration as apprentice journalist, later he briefly worked as a webmaster.[1]

Member of the Five Star Movement since 2007, Di Maio was elected into the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament in 2013. On 21 March 2013 he became the youngest Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies ever elected.[2][3]

On 12 July 2017 Di Maio was formally investigated for defamation following a police report filed by Marika Cassimatis, former candidate mayor of the M5S in Genoa.[4]

On 28 July 2017 the journalist Elena Polidori made a police report against him for defamation. He decided to use the parlamentary immunity despite in the past he has always criticized it and declared that he would never use it.[5]

In September 2017 he won the primary election to be the Prime Minister candidate of the M5S in the 2018 election.
