Marc Mezvinsky (born December 15, 1977) is an American investment banker and co-founder of the now-defunct hedge fund Eaglevale Partners. He is the husband of Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton.[1]

Early life

Mezvinsky was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up attending a Conservative Jewish synagogue.[2] His parents are both former Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives. His father is Edward Mezvinsky (b. 1937), who embezzled more than $10 million from people via both a Ponzi scheme and the advance-fee scams, and was found guilty of fraud in 2001.[3][4][5] His mother is Marjorie Margolies (b. 1942), who was a TV reporter and represented Pennsylvania's 13th District from 1993 to 1995. They declared bankruptcy shortly before Mezvinsky's conviction, and divorced.[6]

Mezvinsky first met Chelsea Clinton as a teenager at a 1993 Democratic political retreat in Hilton Head, South Carolina. He graduated from Stanford University in 2000, where he received a B.A. in religious studies and philosophy. While a student at Stanford in 1997, he remained close friends with Clinton, and as she began looking at colleges, he showed her around the campus. Mezvinsky began dating Clinton in 2005.[7]

Business career

After graduation, he worked for eight years as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs before leaving to join a private equity firm, but left to start his own hedge fund. In 2011, he co-founded a Manhattan-based hedge fund firm, Eaglevale Partners, with two long-time partners, Bennett Grau and Mark Mallon.[1][8] In May 2016, The New York Times reported that the Eaglevale Hellenic Opportunity Fund is said to have lost nearly 90 percent of its value (a 90% loss to investors). In December 2016, Eaglevale Partners closed.[9] Mezvinsky subsequently joined Social Capital as Vice Chairman.[10]

In July 2010, Mezvinsky married Chelsea Clinton in an interfaith ceremony in Rhinebeck, New York.[11] The senior Clintons and Mezvinskys were friends in the 1990s; their children met on a Renaissance Weekend retreat in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.[2] They were first reported to be a couple in 2005, and became engaged in 2009.[12] He comes from a family of nine children.

Following their wedding, the couple lived for three years in New York City's Gramercy Park neighborhood,[11] later purchasing a condominium in the NoMad area of Manhattan for $10.5 million.[13] Clinton and Mezvinsky have a daughter, Charlotte, who was born on September 26, 2014,[14] and a son, Aidan, who was born on June 18, 2016.[15][16] The family currently lives in the nearby Flatiron District.[17]
