Wangoo is a village in Kakching district in the Indian state of Manipur.It is situated approx. 64 km south of the state capital Imphal. It has an area of 13.05 sq.km with a population of 6134.

Geography

Wangoo is located at 24°23′10″N 93°51′37″E / 24.3862°N 93.8604°E / 24.3862; 93.8604. Total geographical area of Wangoo village is 13 sq.km and it is the biggest village by area in the district. Imphal River divides Wangoo into two districts viz. Bishnupur district and Thoubal district.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[1] Wangoo had a population of 6134 of which 3095 are males while 3039 are females. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 734 which is 11.96% of total population of Wangoo. Average Sex Ratio of Wangoo village is 982 which is lower than Manipur state average of 985. Child Sex Ratio for the Wangoo as per census is 1022, higher than Manipur average of 930.Wangoo village has lower literacy rate compared to Manipur. In 2011, literacy rate of Wangoo village was 67.09 % compared to 76.94 % of Manipur. In Wangoo Male literacy stands at 76.43 % while female literacy rate was 57.53 %.

Economy

Agriculture is the main source of income for the majority of the population. In Wangoo village out of total population, 2862 were engaged in work activities. 75.93 % of workers describe their work as Main Work (Employment or Earning more than 6 Months) while 24.07 % were involved in Marginal activity providing livelihood for less than 6 months. Of 2862 workers engaged in Main Work, 1692 were cultivators (owner or co-owner) while 185 were Agricultural labourer.

Education

Literacy rate is very low as compared to the other places of Manipur. There is no school for secondary level and no college in Wangoo.

Culture

Wangoo celebrated 10-day long Tampha Lairembi Haraoba in the summer season. Many people from other places came here to participate Mukna on the last day of Lai Haraoba. And also celebrated Wangoo Baji Haraoba for one day in the spring season. Wangoo Baji was a maichou, a learned man well versed in the Meitei traditional knowledge. It is said that he disappeared into thin air one fine day. Before his disappearance, he had said to the people around that he would come back and when he did come back, the dried up leihao Magnolia champaca tree standing there would spring back to life. When the tree started budding again after many many years later, it was widely believed that he had come back to life, possibly re-born.

Transportation

It is connected to other parts of the state by the Imphal - Sugnu state highway and Imphal - Churachandpur through NH-150.

Health Care Services

Wangoo has a government run Primary Health Centre [2] at Wangoo Laipham Chuthek Leikai.

Politics

Wagoo comes under the constituency of Sugnu and it is part of Outer Manipur (Lok Sabha constituency).
