The Telnyuk Sisters (Template:Lang-uk) are a Ukrainian vocal duo composed of Lesya and Halya Telnyuk, both of whom are Merited Artist of the Ukraine.

One of their most notable achievements is the Vasyl Stus Prize for the preservation and promotion of Ukrainian culture.

Within their repertoire are songs based on poems by T.Shevchenko, P.Tychyna, Ye.Malanuik, B.-I.Antonych, V.Stus, L.Kostenko, O.Zabuzhko and others.

History

From early childhood, Lesya and Halya were surrounded by poetry, music, painting. Their father Stanislav Telnyuk is a Ukrainian writer, literary critic, poet, and translator. Their mother, Nelly Kopylova, is a linguist, a translator of Oriental Languages, and an editor. The poetic word, complete with its rhythms, colors, and melodies, has become an integral and organic influence in shaping the sisters' ideological outlook.

The sisters created their first musical compositions at the age of 13. They created rock ballads, sketches, pastels, elegies, and songs for choral performance based on the verses of classic Ukrainian poets.

Lesya and Halya entrusted their first serious attempt at arranging their own songs to a talented composer, Alexander Melnyk. This was the beginning of a creative collaboration. The duo formed as a professional team in 1986.

Timeline, professional contacts

1987 - A year after their debut, the sisters became the laureates of the national competition "New Names".

1989 - Awarded diplomas at the first and second festival "Chervona Ruta" (1989, 1991). The first songs were created in verse Pavlo Tychyna, whose work was explored by Stanislav Telnyuk. The song "Summer has flew" had lyrics by Tamara Mezentseva, music by Alexander Melnyk, and was performed by The Telnyuk Sisters.

Early 1990's - Albums: "Moment" ("Myt`"), "Lesya and Halya" and nearly a dozen songs continued this creative collaboration. In the 90's, the duo's songs and arrangements were created by the composer Andryj Shust ("Falcon" ("Sokil") "Belles Summer has passed ...").

They adopted a new sound when they began to collaborate with the creative pianist and composer, Ivan Davydenko ("Take offense," "Under the rain," "Ophelia," "Next to you"). Gradually, this work with John Davydenko was also joined by musicians Eugene Bortnychuk, Oleg Putyatin, and Igor Sereda. Together, they released the album "Silence and Thunder."

1997 - The Sisters, along with guitarist Mick Taylor (ex "Rolling Stones"), recorded blues song "My futile love" (Love in vain).

On the 60th anniversary of the birth of the Ukrainian poet Vasyl Stus, the program "Swinging evening broken even ..." was created; it was a series of unique performances by Raisa Nedashkivska in cooperation with the son of the poet Dmytro Stus and actress Halyna Stefanova, bard, composer Sergyi Moroz. Also, the program "On the Edge", which was dedicated to the memory of the poet, was seen and heard by Canadian students.

1998 - The Sisters were awarded the Vasyl Stus Prize for the preservation and promotion of Ukrainian culture.

Early 2000's - The Sisters first got their first taste of creative collaboration with the theater. The controversial play "UBN" (Ukrainian bourgeois nationalist) was staged in Lviv Drama Zankovetska Theatre, led by Fedir Mykholajovych Strygun, Theatre Art Director, People's Artist of Ukraine, Laureate of the Shevchenko Prize. The director was Myroslav Hrynyshyn. The screenwriter was Halyna Telnyuk. The composer of the music was Lesya Telnyuk. Drama "UBN" has become a cultural and political phenomenon. Original version of "UBN" is staged Lutsk Drama Theater.

For many years The Sisters worked with, Nina Morozevich, a teacher in Bandura at Odessa State Conservatory who is the leader of Trio "Mallows" at Odessa State Philharmonic. Together, they composed several Telnyuk Sisters songs, which they performed in concert at home and abroad.

New, original ideas connect Halya and Lesya with Ukrainian minstrel, modern master at making Banduras - Roman Hrynkiv.

In Canada, the Telnyuk Sisters became acquainted with the artist Igor Polishchuk and within a few years there created a modern project "Above us the sky." This project included an original, unique fusion of music, poetry, and painting. This multimedia show also consisted of pictures, songs, and videos. They revealed this groundbreaking event in ten cities around America and Canada.

The duo participated in many joint projects. Albums include:

  • "Ukrainian lullabies"
  • "Kruty. Concert for the Angels "
  • "Festival in Montreal"
  • "Live Voice of Vasyl Stus"
  • "Kobzar"

2008 - The Telnyuk Sisters together with Dmitro Stus and Roman Semysal created the project "Stusove circle" which was about a landmark figure in Ukrainian history - a poet and translator - Vasyl Stus. It was directed by Sergyi Proskurnia.

During December, The Telnyuk Sisters performed on the Komu Vnyz concert tour. The program, "Wind of centuries," was seen and heard in: Odesa, Kherson, Krivyj Rig, Kirovograd, Sumy, Kharkiv Dnipropetrovsk.

2009 - The Sisters joined the "AntonychFest" which is a celebration of the centenary from the birth of B.-I. Antonych, held by artists and youth organizations on a voluntary basis. These are 5 song interpretations on Antonych poetry Forever, Ukrainian and French tracks, written with bands Dead Rooster, "AbыMS" and Olexandr Melnyk.

2010 - In KinoPalats was a premiere of musical film "Telnyuk: Rehearsal. Known in the West, the format rehearsal (rehearsal video) was first in Ukraine involved by director Alexander Antennae in the concert program of the Sisters' Yellow Dandelion." On August 13, 2009 at a recording studio Komora Ukrainian musicians let the film crew shoot the program "on the first take".

Also, The Sisters released their album, "SONMO." In spring they toured several cities of the country, which finished with a grand concert in Kyiv Operetta.
