Gaocun township (simplified Chinese: 高村镇; traditional Chinese: 高村鎮; pinyin: Gāocūn Zhèn) is an administrative region of Wuqing District in Tianjin, a prefecture-level city in the People's Republic of China.[1] It is located half-way between the city centres of Beijing and Tianjin at the Gaocun exit on the Jingjintang Expressway.

Gaocun was promoted from village status to township status in 2013 at around the same time when the region underwent rapid development. Beijing Capital Land has invested billions of Chinese yuan into the Gaocun area by building a Science Park[2][3], an international school called Haileybury International School[4][5], Widsom Plaza and Jingjinhui entertainment complex. Two shopping malls are currently under construction.[6]

Taitou residential compound is a lively community of around 1,000 Chinese residents and around 30 expatriate teachers employed by Haileybury International School.

Transportation

Residents use a combination of electric cars, hybrid vehicles, petrol cars, electric rickshaws and bicycles to commute around the local area.

Local residents offer their electric rickshaws for hire for short trips. Many drivers park outside Taitou North Gate waiting for customers. All drivers accept cash, and most drivers accept electronic payments via WeChat or Alipay using QR code stickers in the rickshaw windows.

No discount is applied for return journeys. Waiting time charges are non-existent or minimal.

Some residents have purchased their own electric rickshaws solely for personal use.

Car pooling

At least two invitation-only car-pooling WeChat groups exist whose purpose is to connect local residents who are travelling to Beijing for car-pooling. Drivers post their departure time and destination in Beijing into the chat group, and riders can request a seat to Beijing for 15 to 20 yuan (depending on the exact destination in Beijing). The WeChat groups are managed by a local resident who uses the pseudonym "Maggie". The groups communicate entirely in Chinese language.

Electric car rental

GreenGo is a company located at Wisdom Plaza that rents out two all-electric cars via a smartphone app called GreenGo. The rental service is unstaffed and is only available to users who possess a valid Chinese ID card and a valid Chinese driving licence.[9]

Some local residents pay private drivers if they need to ride to Beijing. Booking and payment usually takes place via WeChat. A one-way trip to Beijing can cost anything from 250 Chinese yuan to 400 Chinese yuan in a private car depending on the time of day.

Taxis and Didi

There are almost zero taxis in the area and very few Didi cars are willing to make the journey to Gaocun to pick up passengers. It can take several hours to find a Didi car willing to come to Gaocun.

Beijing Capital Land offers two to four shuttle buses each day from the Gaocun area to Beijing (stopping at Cixi subway station on the way).
