Karachi Chinese consulate attack

On 23 November 2018, an armed assault on the Chinese consulate in Karachi, Pakistan killed four people in an hour-long shootout.[1][2][3][4] The victims included two policemen and two civilians.[5] No Chinese national was hurt in the attack.[6] The three attackers were also killed.[7]

Responsibility

The attack is claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA).[8]

According to Express News (Pakistan), Aslam alias Achu - a commander of proscribed BLA, is the mastermind of the attack on Chinese consulate who is currently receiving medical treatment at Max Healthcare in New Delhi, India.[9]

Reactions

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang during a regular press briefing said that "China strongly condemns any violent attacks against diplomatic agencies". He further said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project would proceed despite the attack.[10] The Deputy Chief of Mission at the Chinese embassy, Lijian Zhao in a statement appreciated the Pakistan Army and police for their "timely and proper action" in response to the attack.

United States Chargé d'Affaires Ambassador Paul Jones, in a twitter statement issued by the US Embassy in Islamabad, said that the United States "condemns in the strongest terms today’s attack on the Chinese Consulate".[11]
