  • Comment: I see notability but looking for some more sources. The intended reasoning of the naming of the island is questionable considering it is recorded that Mabel Island was named after a niece Amable Ludlow (1860–1939) Cape Flora after a cousin, Flora Smith, the sister of Valentine Smith. Nightingale Sound was named after his cousin Florence.
The fact that the source also includes that the hill looks like a bell along with the fact that Smith's daughter was named Bella means there was far more likely dual reasoning. Otr500 (talk) 00:24, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Bell Island (Russian: Остров Белл) is a small island in the south-west of the Franz Josef Land archipelago in Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia. The island was named by the English explorer Benjamin Leigh Smith for its bell-shaped mountain which rises steeply from the island's southern coast with the Barents Sea.

History

The island was the first among the Franz Josef archipelago to be visited by Benjamin Leigh Smith in his 1880 expedition. In his second expedition to the islands in 1881, Smith build a wooden lodge on the north side of the island which he used to winter. The lodge stands to this day. The island was later visited by the Svyataya Anna of the ill-fated Brusilov Expedition in 1914.[1]
