Chhewang Nima (Nepali: छेवाङ निमा) (also spelled Chuwang Nima,[1] and Chuwang Nima,[2] c. 1967 – 23 October 2010) was a Nepalese Sherpa who reached the summit of Mount Everest 19 times.[3] He disappeared on 24 October 2010 after being struck by an avalanche near the summit of Mount Baruntse.[3] On 25 October it was announced that the search had been called off.[4] His death in the avalanche and subsequent search made international news.[5][6] He worked as a professional mountaineer, but at the time of his death he was helping another team fix lines after they had asked for help.[7]
Examples of summits:
- Everest
- Ama Dablam
- October 26, 2009 Chuwang Nima Sherpa (Tesho, Nepal)[10]
At the time of Chhewang's death he had 19 Everest summits, one short of the then record.[11]
