Teniola Apata, better known as Teni, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and entertainer.[1][2]

Early life and education

Teni is the younger sister of Nigerian singer Niniola.[3] She attended Apata Memorial High School and has a degree in business administration from American InterContinental University.[4] Teni’s birth name is Teniola Apata, and she hails from Ekiti State. She was born in Lagos to Mr and Mrs Apata, as the 9th of 10 children. Her father was a retired Brigadier General before he was assassinated in 1995 when Teni was just 2years old.[5]

Her music is versatile, as anything around her inspires her. She loves Wasiu Ayinde’s songs, and this reflects in her songs as well. Music is spiritual to Teni, as she believes she can change people’s narratives with her music.

As a child, she was in the school band, where she played the drums. Also, as a child, she and her siblings weren’t allowed to go out, so they always stayed in the corridor singing on top of their voices.

Teniola loves playing basketball, so, if she wasn’t a singer, she most likely would have been a basketballer. She is also interested in business, charity, and tech. Teni attributes her high level of confidence to her parents, especially her mum.[6]

Career

Teni released her debut single "Amen" while signed to Shizzi's Magic Fingers Records.[7] She left the record label and signed with Dr. Dolor Entertainment in 2017.[8] Teni started gaining prominence after releasing the single "Fargin" in September 2017. She made her breakthrough after releasing the hit singles "Askamaya", "Case" and "Uyo Meyo".[9] "Askamaya" was ranked 15th on MTV Base's year-end list of the Top 20 Hottest Naija Tracks of 2018.[10]

Teni won Rookie of the Year at the 2019 Headies Awards, and Most Promising Act to Watch at the 2018 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.[11] She also won Best New Artist at the 2018 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival.[12] NotJustOk ranked her eighth on their list of the 10 Hottest Artists In Nigeria.[13] She was listed among the "Six Nigerian breakout stars, viral sensations of 2018" by Premium Times newspaper.[14]

On 20 February 2019, Teni was featured on YouTube Music's Trending Artist on the Rise.[15] On May 3rd, 2019, Teni released the video for "Sugar Mummy". On June 14, 2019, Teni released a new single titled “Power Ranger”. [16]
