Sans is a major character in the role-playing video game Undertale by Toby Fox. A skeleton and brother of Papyrus,[2] Sans is introduced as a comic relief character but is revealed to actually be one of the most powerful and knowledgeable entities in the game. This is hinted throughout the game with him teleporting and threatening players. His name is based on the Comic Sans font, which is used for all of his dialogue. His boss fight, which is only accessible in the "genocide run," was widely praised as the most difficult and interesting in the game.

A version of the character also appears as brief cameo in the Town area of the related game Deltarune.[3] Sans' likeness also appears as a customizable skin for the Mii Gunner character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.[4] He was announced during Nintendo Direct on the 4th of September 2019 and was released the same day.

Character development

Sans was Voiced by Temmie Chang at the Undertale.[1] On an Early Concept's drawing, Sans before would wear a fedora like Papyrus,[5] there are also no arts about Sans, but has a note of Sans being brother of Papyrus.[6] Sans' first concept drawing was made by Fox on a college notebook.[7] The song that plays during his fight was originally composed for an EarthBound ROM hack.[8] He is one of the characters who does not use the default font in his dialogue, rather it is displayed in lowercase Comic Sans. He is often paired with his brother named Papyrus.[9]

History and appearances

In Undertale

Prior to the events of Undertale, Sans had moved to Snowdin from an unknown location with his brother Papyrus. The duo was soon hired as sentries for the Royal Guard.[10]

Sans first appears in Snowdin Forest, initially appearing as a silhouette before approaching the player from behind, before shaking the player's hand setting off a whoopee cushion. He clarifies that he has no interest in capturing humans, unlike Papyrus, who he describes as a "human-hunting FANATIC." After helping the player hide from Papyrus, Sans follows his brother throughout most of the forest, commentating on his puzzles and even contributing a word search, much to Papyrus' dismay. He continues to play practical jokes on the player throughout the game such as trying to sell them fried snow. Later in the game he asks the player to go eat at a restaurant. As he talks, he explains how he befriended a woman (who is actually Toriel) behind the large door in Snowdin who shared an equal love for puns as he did. He tells how he made a promise not to kill any humans who come to the Underground and states if he didn't make that promise the player would have been dead where they stand.

Sans makes one more appearance in the "Judgement Hall", where he reveals the true meaning of the "EXP" and "LOVE" values that the player has accumulated through the game: Execution Points and Level of Violence respectively. He judges the player for how high their EXP and LOVE are before disappearing and letting the player proceed to fight Asgore. If the player did not kill any monsters, Sans appears after Asgore's defeat along with the other main characters, only to be captured by Flowey and have his soul absorbed along with the other monsters. However, he is restored after the reborn Asriel Dreemurr was defeated, being set free with everyone else.

On the other hand, Sans' behavior is much different in a Genocide Run. He threatens the player with a "bad time" if they proceed with their actions before the Papyrus boss fight. He eventually confronts the player in the Judgement Hall, acting as the route's final boss. He is considered one of the game's hardest bosses, with the song that plays during his fight, "MEGALOVANIA", becoming one of the game’s most popular tracks as a result. He is eventually slain by the player, allowing them to finish the route.[11]

Deltarune

In chapter one of Deltarune, Sans is found standing outside his shop. He informs the player he has already met their mother, Toriel, and asks them if they would like to come over to his house and meet his brother.[12]

In other media

Sans was a playable Mii fighter character costume in 2018's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of the game's core fighting cast.[13] Around the same time, he also received his own Amiibo figure from Nintendo after being made by fan.[14] Sans also appears in Fortnite as a boss fight as a community-created map[15] [16] and Monster Hunter: World as a mod.[17] Sans also appeared in a Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! as a DLC[18] and on 700 club.[19] Sans also appears in a fan made wrestling game.[20]

Reception

Although Sans is praised, some fans think that Patrick Star was the voice of the character,[21] and Sans known by fans to suffer depression.[22] After Sans was added as a Mii fighter costume on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC, the character received mixed reviews with fans losing their mind when a character which was known as a meme, was included in the roster,[23] Although the character met with criticism for not having the same reputation to the other characters.[24] TheGamer ranked Sans as top 3 on the characters of Undertale, stating that Sans jokes are Hilarious.[25] Screen Rant ranked Sans one of the top 7 of the hardest boss fights in the video games.[26]

Some fans make creative fan art depicting Sans,[27] and also make mash-ups with Dark Souls art.[28] Destructoid stated that Sans looked more as a Villain in his appearances in 700 club.[19] On a interview of Mary Sue, she said that Sans is a beloved indie character.[8] Various merchandise depicting various characters including Sans was released,[29] including in toy commercial.[30] As being interviewed by Destructoid, Toby Fox Likes Sans the most.[31] On Undertale Q&A, Sans and Papyrus were the most popular characters and one of the biggest questions asked about by the fans.[32] According to Dan Tack, encountering Sans on genocide was one of the coolest and loves it.[33]
