Greyhound is an upcoming war film directed by Aaron Schneider and starring Tom Hanks, who also serves as writer.[3] It is based on The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester. The film also stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Elisabeth Shue, Stephen Graham and Rob Morgan, and follows a US Navy Commander on his first war-time assignment at the midpoint of World War II during the Battle of the Atlantic, as he leads his multi-national escort group as they defend a convoy of merchant ships as submarines attack.

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 12, 2020. A portion of principal photography for Greyhound was filmed aboard U.S.S. Kidd, a WW2 era Fletcher Class destroyer museum ship in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Kidd is an important local monument and tourist attraction.

Premise

During the early days of the United States' involvement in World War II, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by Commander Ernest Krause, crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while being hotly pursued by wolf packs of German U-boats.[4] The film focuses on Krause, a career officer who was finally given command of a destroyer, USS KEELING (radio code named 'Greyhound')'. Unlike the prototypical hero, he must battle his own self-doubts and personal demons to be an effective leader of the defenders.[5]

Cast

Production

It was announced in September 2016 that Tom Hanks was writing a screenplay about a World War II Navy destroyer. Hanks would also star in the film.[6] In February 2017, Aaron Schneider was brought on to direct, and Sony Pictures acquired the distribution rights.[7]

Pre-production photography took place in January 2018 at sea on board HMCS Montréal, a frigate of the Royal Canadian Navy. In March 2018, Stephen Graham, Elisabeth Shue, Rob Morgan, Karl Glusman, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo were cast, and filming had commenced in Louisiana,[8][9][10] including aboard the USS Kidd in Baton Rouge.[11][12]

Release

It is scheduled to be released on June 12, 2020.[13] It was originally scheduled to be released in the United States on March 22, 2019, and on May 8, 2020.[14]
