Overview

Megan Clarken[1] (born October 30, 1966) is a media executive and former Olympic-class athlete.

She’s most known for spending over 15 years at measurement company, Nielsen, where she spanned several leadership positions including Chief Commercial Officer[2] of Nielsen Global Media.

In November 2019, Megan was appointed Chief Executive Officer at Criteo, one of the world’s largest[3] France-based Ad Tech companies.

Early Life

Megan grew up in Auckland, New Zealand[4], one of four children and spent her youth focused on track and field.

She represented New Zealand[5] on numerous occasions from a young age ranging from the 100M, 200M, High Jump, Long Jump and Heptathlon.

Her early success came when she broke a world age record[6] as a 12 year old in the High Jump of 1.70m.

Megan went on to represent Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) at the 1984 World Cup in Canberra, Australia.

Her Commonwealth and Olympic qualifying jumps would have placed her in the top 10 at the 1988 Olympics and a potential gold medalist at the 1986 Commonwealth games.

Megan suffered a serious injury to her left knee prior to the events and was forced to retire from track and field unable to pursue her Olympic dream[7].

Today, Megan still holds four records[8] in Long Jump and the 100M in New Zealand.

In the book “Athletes of the Century”, by Peter Heidenstrom[9] , Megan is described as “…one of the most talented youngsters New Zealand athletics has ever lost.”

Career

Megan has held senior leadership positions for large publishers and online technology providers in Australia, including Akamai Technologies and ninesmn[10].

In 2004[11], Megan joined measurement company, Nielsen, as part of an acquisition of NetRatings, where she held the position of Product Leader.

In 2008, Nielsen promoted Megan Clarken to the position of MD, Pacific[12] to lead the firm's commercial business in Australia and New Zealand.

Eventually, Megan progressed to the position of Global President of Watch[13], the segment of Nielsen’s business that provides media and advertising clients audience measurement services including the official “Ratings” across 30[14] countries.

Megan is the architect of Nielsen’s cross platform measurement known as “Total Audience”[15] which includes digital consumption into the Ratings.

In 2018, Clarken was named Chief Commercial Officer[16] for Nielsen Global Media.

According to a 2019 Variety[17] article, “Clarken has been with the media-measurement company since 2004, and has been among the executives working to build a new methodology of counting viewers who watch TV programs in venues other than the traditional living-room screen. Her efforts have been critical to the health of big U.S. entertainment companies like CBS, NBCUniversal, Viacom, Walt Disney, Fox Corporation and WarnerMedia.”

Megan spearheaded the Nielsen expansion of its reporting capabilities[18] to include same-sex spouse and partner audiences into its national TV panel.

Megan also led Nielsen’s measurement of audiences on Netflix in 2017[19].

In 2019, Megan became Chief Executive Officer at Criteo, and was added to Criteo’s Board of Directors[20] in 2020.

Megan has appeared in Entrepreneur[21], Business Insider[22], Adweek[23], and AdExchanger[24], among others.

She has also spoken at events in the technology industry Advertising Week[25], Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity[26], Consumer 360 Conference[27], ReThink[28], VivaTech[29], AudiencexScience[30] and AdExchanger’s Industry Preview 2019[31].
