Mezdatta (in Berber : Imezdaten, in tifinagh : ⵉⵎⴻⵣⴷⴰⵜⴻⵏ) is a village of the great Kabylia located at 15 km in southwest of Tizi Ouzou province in Betrouna region, municipality of Tizi Ouzou, in Algeria.[1].

Toponymy

The name of Imezdaten is the origin of the Berber word Ar zedat meaning « Those who go forward »[2] or « The Brave »[3]. The name of the village is "Imezdaten" arabized to "Mezdatta", and also called by the Arabs under name of "M'zidène"[4]. The name was disfigured by secretaries of the generals in dispatches and reports during French colonialism 1830 - 1962[5].

Localisation

Geography situation

Geographically, the village is the last locality of the Municipality of Tizi-Ouzou towards the limits of the region of Maatka, on the national road CW 147. The village is located in a mountain called ighil Bou Rioul in the tribe of Betrouna, the village of imezdaten which affects 3 communes at the same time including the commune of Tizi ouzou, Maâtkas and Tirmitine; is the highest among the 22 villages of Betrouna, estimated at 726 m above sea level, which it considers to be one of the main villages in "ibetrunen".

Limitrophe village

It is surrounded to the north by the villages of Taddart oufella and Ighil Ouberouak, to the west by the municipality of Tirmitine, to the east by the Amejoud Forest, and to the south by the two villages of Igariden and Anegah de la commune of Maatka.

Transport

The village of Mezdatta is crossed to the west by the national road CW 147 which passes through the region of Betrouna towards the Commune of Maatka.

The village has two public transport lines including the line of "Betrouna - Tizi-ouzou" which lead to the village stop (the city) from the "South-West stop" in Tizi-ouzou with a payment of 50.00 Dinars. The second line is “Maâtkas - Tizi-ouzou” which costs 70.00 Dinars from the stop of annar amellal to the stop of Mezdatta (the city).

The two lines of the village have almost the same distance; is 15 km, the transportation is done by Nissan, Ford and Hyundai vans with 15 seats, it will take about 25 to 35 minutes to reach the village stop, on the way there are several stops in different villages of Betrouna region.

Nature

Imezdaten contains several plants like Olives, Fig tree, Prickly pear, pomegranates, grapes, and with several genera and quality. In the Amejoud Forest (which occupies a certain area of ​​the village) there are also many plants, including fruit trees such as the strawberry tree, the acorns of the holm oak, the cork oaks, the quinces, and many species below such as Allium triquetrum, mushrooms and others.

The green cover also occupies a large area of ​​the village including the forests and agriculture of the villagers.

History

On June 6, 1851, Tizi Ouzou's column had found Oued-fali impassable and had to wait to cross it, until the water had subsided; they could only arrive that day in the village of Imezdaten, in Betrouna. The difficult climb that led to, it was cut off by trenches and olive and ash trees[6] · [7]

In the second half of the nineteenth century, the colonizer reached his first pats in the Ath Betrouna which contains three "toufik", in particular which experienced several battles including the battle of Ait khelifa and the battle of Cherif Boubaghla, the conduct of the French cost them 3 dead and 21 wounded hunted by the men of imezdaten and ibetrunen[7], and on the other side also it cost many souls and martyrs, after great resistance, the occupier dominates the tribe of ibetrunen, the village was completely evacuated ، the villagers abandoned their shelters to flee towards the other surroundings, indeed, the village became a ghost village without inhabitants, which makes a locality under French domination.
