Kakkay Tribe

Kakkay Abbasi (Urdu: ککے عباسی) (known as Kakkay Sheikhs (ککے شیخ ) is a tribe that was inhibited in the Ropar/Rupnagar (روپڑ) in Sirhind (سر ہند) region of Punjab. Kakkay Abbasi tribe speak Punjabi in dialects of East Punjab. After partition in 1947 they migrated to Pakistan mainly in Districts of Sheikhupura and Lahore. District Ropar/ Rupnagar (روپڑ) more densely counted their population. Before partition (1947) Kakkay Abbasi (well known Kakkay Sheikhs of Ropar روپڑ) were major caste of Ropar municipality. "Shekhian Mohalla" in District Ropar/Rupnagar was inhibited by this clan. They were prosperous traders and big land holders. According to Ambala Gazette 1923-24 (Shaikhs) were big land holders but depend largely on their tenants and do not perform agriculture themselves. They do trade in municipalities. Kakkay is gotra use for people of this tribe.

Origin

According to local legends, Kakkay Abbasi claim to be descent from Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib, who was a Sahabi and the paternal uncle of the Islamic Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH). According to a claim they came in India as traders and merchants and made colony in Sirhind (near Ropar) in 1520.

Religion

Kakkay Abbasi are Sunni Muslims and traditionally followers and devotees of Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi Mujaddid Alf Sani (شیخ احمد سر ہندی مجدد الف ثانی).
