Cutthroat Kitchen is a reality cooking television show hosted by Alton Brown that premiered on August 11, 2013 on Food Network. Similar to short-form cooking reality shows, it features four chefs challenged to cook gourmet dishes to be judged by a guest celebrity, but introduces auctions in which they can purchase opportunities to sabotage each other or benefit themselves. Each chef is given $25,000 at the start of the show; the winner keeps whatever money he/she has not spent in the auctions. The show is in its sixth season as of November, 2014.[1]

Format

Each episode of Cutthroat Kitchen features four chefs faced with three cooking challenges. Each challenge gives the chefs a type of dish to create, and unlike sister show Chopped, which awards for creativity, Cutthroat asks its contestant chefs for comparatively mundane dishes, things like macaroni and cheese, French toast, and fish and chips. They are expected to refine their dishes to high cuisine standards within a limited amount of time, typically 30 minutes, after one minute of acquiring ingredients from a pantry. Any chefs who fail to leave the pantry before this minute is up must surrender an ingredient of Brown's choosing. After the dishes are prepared, a guest judge evaluates each one and the chef with the worst dish is eliminated.

At the start of the game, each chef is given $25,000. In each of the first two challenges, once the chefs have acquired their ingredients, Brown sells a number of sabotage/benefit items at auction, with the winning bidder for each item paying from his/her remaining funds. Bids usually start at either $500 or $1000, and increase in $100 increments, with a minimum bid of $200. A chef can use a sabotage item against his/her opponents in order to affect their choice of ingredients, cooking implements/methods, or other aspects of the challenge. For example, a sabotage item may force a chef to give up fresh ingredients for canned or frozen ones, or to cook with a heat source other than a conventional oven or stove. Failure to comply with the sabotage conditions can lead to mockery from Brown, a fine, and/or being forced to restart the recipe. Benefit items give an advantage to the winning bidder, such as being the only chef allowed to use certain ingredients, taste their dishes, or use certain cooking methods. The judge is sequestered in a soundproof booth and not told of these sabotages or benefits, so that each dish is judged in an unbiased manner. Eliminated chefs forfeit all of their remaining money.

During the final challenge, no sabotage items are presented initially; instead, Brown auctions off items while the chefs are cooking. The winner of an item can immediately use it against his/her opponent, forcing that chef to change his/her cooking method in order to comply. The victor keeps whatever is left of his/her original $25,000 after all of his/her winning auction bids have been paid.[2][3] As of Season 5, one episode has ended in a tie, with both chefs keeping their money.

Judges

The regular judges on the show are Jet Tila, Simon Majumdar, and Antonia Lofaso.
Giada DeLaurentiis was the guest judge on "The Yolk's on You."
Geoffrey Zakarian judged in the episode "Well, Hot Clam!"
Restaurateurs Jaime Martin Del Campo, Ramiro Arvizu, Daniel Holzman, and Sherry Yard all judged in the episode "Judging Judges"

Special challenges and episodes

In "A Crepe-y Situation," the first viewer-submitted sabotage was used. The same sabotage was also done before contestants got their supplies. The sabotage involved forcing one contestant to shop without a basket.

"Gluttons for Punishment" featured former contestants who lost in earlier episodes looking to redeem themselves.

"Breakfast in Bed" features former champions. It is also known as "Wicked Winners" for the ways the contestants first won.

"Judging Judges" featured the three main judges and Geoffrey Zakarian competing in the same types of competitions similar to regular contestants, with the winnings going to charity. Antonia Lofaso won with $22,000 remaining, which was re-upped to the full $25,000 for her charity. Runners-up Tila, Majumdar & Zakarian each received consolation prizes of $5,000 for their charities.

In October 2014, the show aired a special five-part celebrity tournament subtitled "Superstar Sabotage", with the winning celebrity chef earning up to $75,000 in cash for their favorite charity.[4] In early September, the sixteen chefs involved were announced, the episodes would air on Wednesday instead of the usual Sunday.[5] Those eliminated in the heats were given $2,500 for their charities. In the finals, the contestants were given $50,000 to bid.

In "Crabs of Steel", judge Tila announced a tie between the two chefs in the final round. They both got to keep the money they had left.
