David James "DJ" Butler (born May 10, 1973) is an award-winning[1] American epic flintlock fantasy and steampunk author. He current resides in Utah. [2]

Early life and Legal Career

He completed his undergrad at BYU, where he received a BA in Near Eastern Studies. He then attended the NYU School of Law, earning his Juris Doctor in 1999. He spent over a decade working as a lawyer for various companies, including Micron Technology and Intel, before opening an independent firm in 2010.[3] He is currently employed as a corporate trainer, using his skills as a story teller to educate business people.[3]

Career

In 2012 his steampunk Western novel City of Saints was a Whitney Award finalist in the Speculative Fiction category.[4] This work would be picked up by WordFire Press and published under their imprint n 2016.

Butler's first traditionally published novel was the 2016 middle grade steampunk adventure, The Kidnap Plot.[3]

In 2017, Baen published the first of Butler's American epic flintlock fantasy series, Witchy Eye. Set in an alternate 1815 America filled with strange magic, dangerous beast men, powerful Ohio Mound Builder kingdoms, and a far-flung electoral empire run by the descendants of William Penn. the series follows a young mean-spirited and homely Appalachian-raised witch, Sarah, who is the rightful heir to both the Empire and the fallen Kingdom of Cahokia.
