Dubai Modern High School (originally The Modern High School, Dubai) is an Indian-curriculum school in Dubai, founded in 1986. An integral part of the GEMS group of schools, it offers the ICSE syllabus and a day-boarding system which encompasses all aspects of a student's life.

History

The school was originally in the Karama area of Dubai. It had a humble beginning in temporary classrooms with only around 200 students. In 1988, it shifted to its current campus located near Safa Park in Jumeirah between First and Second Interchanges on Sheikh Zayed Road. The school recently celebrated its 20th anniversary on the 20th of September 2006, with the first gathering of alumni and the formation of the Alumni Association.

Academics

Academics is one of the strengths of Modern High. The school maintains consistently high scores in both the ICSE and ISC examinations.

In 2004, DMHS was honoured with having one of their students, Aditya Galgotia, become the All-India ISC topper, with an average of 98.75% In 2005, the ICSE batch class average was 86.2%, with 33.5% of the students scoring above 90%. Shrivats Mohan Iyer topped the examination with 96.6%.Rishi Marwa came first in the commerce stream with an average of 95%. In 2006, 31% of the ICSE candidates scored above 90%. Ankit Kushwaha came first with an average of 96.2%. Nikhil Krishnan topped the ISC exam, with 97.25% for the science stream. Pranita Fernandes topped the commerce stream with 96%. In the 2007 ISC Examinations , the topper Unmukt Goel attained a percentage of 98.5% , coming second at the All India Level. At the ICSE level The Batch of '09 broke all academic records at Modern with 47% of the students scoring 90 and above and 87% of the students getting 80 and above. The topper was Nishant Ganesh Kumar with 97.6% , a new record for the school.

Debating

From 2000 onwards, under the guidance of Mr. Michael James (Debating in-charge), the Modern High debating team has been competing at an 'All-India' level. It has witnessed great success in its endeavors.

2007

Adithya Srinivasan was appointed Debate Captain.

The Modern High team travelled to the Doon School to take part at the 51st Chuckerbutty Memorial Debate. The team comprised Adhitya Srinivasan, Rajiv Naresh, Rama Kulkarni and Avneeth Fernandes. The team entered into the semi-finals after placing second in Pool B. In the 'Just A Minute' segment in the semi-finals, Rajiv Naresh was awarded Best Speaker. Modern placed 3rd, failing to qualify for the Finals (later won by the Doon School, Dehra Dun).

The Debate team comprising Rajiv Naresh and Adhitya Srinivasan took part in the the Annual Consul General Debate at the Indian Consulate, Dubai. After a closely fought competition Rajiv Naresh was adjudged the Best Speaker For the motion. The team won the overall trophy also.

On 10 December, 2007, the Modern Debating Society was inaugurated by the School's patron, Shashi Tharoor. Twenty one students were inducted into the Society as part of an attempt to strengthen the foundation for Debating at Modern. The office of the "Debate Captain" was abolished and replaced by "President of the Modern Debating Society". In addition to the President, offices were also created for Vice President and Secretary of the Debating Society.

2006

Shrivats Mohan Iyer was appointed Debate Captain.

The Modern High team won the 'All India Annual Chuckerbutty Memorial English Debate' at the Doon School, Dehra Dun. The team comprised Shrivats Mohan Iyer, Kaushik Mohan Iyer, Adhitya Srinivasan and Rajiv Naresh. Shrivats won 1st place in the preliminary round and in the 'Just A Minute' segment in the semi-finals. In the finals, Modern High beat the host school. Adhitya Srinivasan was adjudged the 'Most Promising Speaker'. In the same year, the Modern High team won the prestigious 'All India Frank Anthony Memorial Debate' held at Frank Antony Public School. Kaushik Mohan Iyer won the 3rd best speaker award. Rohan Mazumdar accompanied the team to the Chuckerbutty Debate.

2005

The team comprising Shrivats Mohan Iyer and Kaushik Mohan Iyer won the Annual Consul General Debate at the Indian Consulate, Dubai. Shrivats Mohan Iyer was adjudged the Best Speaker.

2004

The team comprising Aditya Shashi and Rohan Singh placed 2nd at the Frank Antony Debate, where Rohan Singh was adjudged the Best Speaker. They later won the Annual Consul General Debate at the Indian Consulate, Dubai. Rohan Singh was once again adjudged the Best Speaker.

2003
The team of Anish Palekar and Varsha Ramakrishnan placed 2nd at the Frank Antony Debate. Anish Palekar was adjudged 2nd Best Speaker. A team comprising Varsha Ramakrishnan and Madhumita Subramaniam placed 2nd at the Annual Consul General Debate. Madhumita won the Best Speaker award while Varsha placed 2nd.

2002
The team of Arjun Barman and Anish Palekar placed 2nd at the Frank Antony Debate. Arjun Burman was adjudged the 2nd Best Speaker. At the Annual Consul General Debate, Modern High came first. Arjun Burman won the 'Best Speaker' award.

2001
The team of Anand Koshy and Arjun Barman placed 2nd at the Frank Antony Debate.

2000
The team of Anand Koshy and Roshan Nair placed 2nd at the Frank Antony Debate.

House System

With a view to foster a competitive spirit among its students, all students are divided into various 'houses'. A number of inter-house events fills the calendar year. These events become the ground work for competition at a higher level. The houses are named after constellations.
