Everything Is Illuminated is a 2005 adventure/comedy/drama, written and directed by Liev Schreiber and starring Elijah Wood. It was adapted from the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer.
Plot
- Tagline: Leave normal behind.
A young American Jewish man goes on a quest to find the woman who saved his grandfather in a small Ukrainian town that was wiped off the map when the Nazis liquidated Eastern European shtetls. His guides are a cranky grandfather and his over-enthusiastic grandson, whose fractured command of English, passion for American pop culture, and constant chatter threaten to make the worst of every situation. But what starts out as the tour from hell turns into a meaningful journey, with an unexpected series of revelations that will change all of their lives.
Trivia
Although the film is set in the Ukraine, all non-English dialogue is in Russian rather than Ukrainian. This is understandable to a point, the main characters of Alex and his grandfather being from the primarily Russian-speaking city of Odessa, but there are some interesting linguistic crossover moments, like a peasant woman who has a large collection of boxes in her house all labelled in Ukrainian but only seems to speak Russian.
The movie was mostly shot in Czech Republic: The Lvov central station is the Prague Exhibition Grounds (Prazske vystaviste) etc.
Music
Everything Is Illuminated features a unique score, which includes DeVotchKa's single "How It Ends". Music by the Russian ska punk band Leningrad was also featured in the film.
Criticism
Some criticise the book and film's portrayal of Ukrainian gentiles as one-sided, although the story includes many accounts in which Ukranians are forced to collaborate with the Nazis.
