Kanaani cat (in Hebrew: חתול כנעני) is an experimental domesticated cat breed that was bred in Germany, but have originated in a cattery in Jerusalem, Israel.

The cat breed was named after the land of Canaan, which is now recognized as the area located between the Lebanon and the Sinai Peninsula.[1]

Kanaanis still have wild instincts shared from wildcats, and are fairly new domesticated cat breed. They are also called "experimental", because they are still being domesticated.[2][3]

Domestication

The German-Israeli artist Doris Pollatschek is considered to be the founder of the Kanaani cat breed.

The domestication of the Kanaani occurred through a hybridization of animals of the local Falcon Cat (Felis silvestris lybica) with domestic cats. He[who?] mostly breeded Abyssinian and Bengal cats to get the Kanaani.[clarify][4][5]

Characteristics

The breed is characterized by a muscular and athletic appearance, with short and coarse fur, long legs, small feet and a strong tail. The facial structure includes large almond-shaped eyes, and ears that are far apart compared to other cat breeds.[1]

The color of the Kanaani cat's eyes ranges from green to yellow. Its fur comes in many shades of colors: brown, coffee, cinnamon, with a dotted, striped or marble texture.[1]

The breed is active, energetic, playful and affectionate,[3] but are also independent.[6]
