SpongeBob SquarePants is an animated television series broadcast on Nickelodeon, an American cable network. The series premiered on May 1, 1999[1] and is currently in its seventh season.

Each season consists of twenty episodes. Each episode consists of either two eleven-minute shorts, three seven-minute shorts, a twenty-two minute special, or a forty-five minute television movie. An additional 19 episodes have yet to air. As of June 5, 2009, a total of 121 episodes have aired. The total number of episodes, without their sister episode(s) counted together, 236 episodes have aired.

A feature film, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie complements the series, and premiered in theaters in the United States on November 19, 2004. In season five, the series' first television movie, Atlantis SquarePantis, premiered on November 12, 2007 after a marathon. There have been many marathons in which viewers vote for their favorite episodes. One of the more notable marthons is the Best Day Ever marathon,[2][3][4][5] which aired from November 9–10, 2006. "Karate Island" was named the best episode ever to date by voters. Five of the seasons are available on DVD.[6]

Season 1: 1999-2000

The first season of SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on May 1, 1999, but officially first aired on July 17, 1999.[1] The season ended on April 8, 2000. The DVD for the season was released in Regions 1, 2, and 4 on October 28, 2003, November 7, 2005, and November 30, 2006, respectively. Season 2: 2000-2002

The second season of SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on October 26, 2000, with the episodes "Something Smells" and "Bossy Boots." The season ended on September 6, 2002 with "Graveyard Shift" and "Krusty Love." The DVD for the season was released in Regions 1, 2, and 4 on October 19, 2004, October 23, 2006, and November 30, 2006, respectively.

Season 3: 2001-2004

The third season of SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on October 5, 2001, with the episodes "Just One Bite" and "The Bully." The season ended on October 11, 2004 with "SpongeBob Meets the Strangler" and "Pranks a Lot." The DVD for the season was released in Regions 1, 4 and 2 on September 27, 2005, November 8, 2007 and December 3, 2007 respectively. Following the season three finale, the series entered a hiatus that would last for over six months. During the hiatus, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie entered theaters.

Season 4: 2005-2007

The fourth season of SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on May 6, 2005, with the episodes "Fear of a Krabby Patty" and "Shell of a Man." The season ended on July 24, 2007 with "Squid Wood." Unlike the previous seasons' DVDs, season four's was split by volume. The volume one DVD was released in Region 1 on September 12, 2006. The volume two DVD was released in Region 1 on January 9, 2007. The Season set was released its entirety in Region 2 on November 3, 2008.

Season 5: 2007-2009

The fifth season of SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on February 19, 2007, with the episodes "Rise and Shine," "Waiting," and "Sing a Song of Patrick." The season has, thus far, consisted of 19.5 episodes. The season will finish airing on July 19, 2009, when the episode "Goo Goo Gas" airs. [21] Just like in season four, the season DVDs were split by volume. The volume one DVD was released in Region 1 on September 4, 2007. The volume two DVD has been released since November 18, 2008.

Season 6: 2008-2009

The sixth season of SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on March 3, 2008,[29] with the episode "Krabby Road." The season has, thus far, consisted of 18.5 episodes. This season is currently airing. The episodes "To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants," "Overbooked," and "No Hat for Pat" are the only episodes from this season that have not yet aired. The first 5 episodes aired as part of the Gimme 5! Week. The next 5 new episodes have aired in the first week of June 2008 which is mainly titled SpongeBob Premiere Factor 5 (or SPF 5). Another premiere week aired August 4-8, called Bikini Bottom Confidential. Seven new premieres of Season six aired during Super Stuffed Nicktoons Weekend. Two episodes aired on February 16, part of Presidents' Day, and three new episodes have air afterward as part of "Triple Play". Another set of episodes will air between March 16 - 20, as part of "The Bob Squad". A eighth special, SpongeBob vs. The Big One aired on April 17, 2009 with guest star, Johnny Depp as Jack Kahuna Laguna. A 100 episode marathon is scheduled for July 17-19, 2009, including the final episodes of the season, "To SquarePants or Not To SquarePants", "Overbooked", and "No Hat for Pat".[30][21]

The seventh season of SpongeBob SquarePants was announced in March 2008.[33][34][35][36] The season premiered on March 16, 2009 with "Sand Castles in the Sand." This season has, thus far, consisted of 2 episodes. 18 episodes of this season have yet to air, including the TV Movie, "The Great Escape," which will air in November 2009.
