Isolated stands of pseudo-maquis, near Tekirdağ. Note the distinctive fall foliage.

Pseudomaquis, sometimes qualified as Submediterranean pseudomaquis,[1] are thickets of broadleaf shrubs and small trees, forming the transition vegetation between Mediterranean forests or shrublands and temperate forests.[2] Consisting of both deciduous and sclerophyllous evergreen plants, these thickets are found in three distinct belts:[3] in higher altitudes near typical Mediterranean climates (e.g. in Spain, Italy and southern France),[4][5] at sea level in the transition zones between Mediterranean and continental or humid temperate climates (e.g. in the Balkans),[6] and in humid temperate regions affected by deforestation (e.g. in northern Turkey).[7]
