Increasing this stat will: Increase flee (chance to dodge enemy attacks) by 1 for each AGI point, increase attack speed by a percentage of a point determined by the player's AGI, DEX, attack speed potions (potions that increase attackspeed), weapon type and job class. Increasing this stat does not increase the player's casting time/cast delay or movement speed.<ref name="stats" />

Ragnarok Online (Korean: 라그나로크 온라인, alternatively subtitled The Final Destiny of the Gods), often referred to as RO, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game or MMORPG created by GRAVITY Co., Ltd. based on the manhwa Ragnarok by Lee Myung-jin. It was first released in South Korea on 31 August 2002 for Microsoft Windows and has since been released in many other locales around the world. Much of the game's mythos is based on Norse mythology, but its style and settings have been influenced by a wide variety of international cultures. The game has spawned an animated series, Ragnarok the Animation, and a sequel game, Ragnarok Online 2: The Gate of the World, is in development. Player characters interact in a 3D environment but are represented by 2D character sprites for front, back, side and diagonal facings.

Setting

An event taking place in Morroc, a desert town

Ragnarok Online is divided into a series of maps, each of which has its own terrain and native monsters, though many monsters are present in multiple regions. Transportation between maps requires loading the new map and monsters cannot travel from one map to another.

There are three major nations in Ragnarok Online, the first of which and where all players start is Rune Midgard. The Schwaltzvalt Republic, an industrialized neighbor to the North, was added in Episode 10[4] and Arunafeltz, a religious nation modeled after a combination of Israel and Turkey is the subject of Episode 11.[5]

A series of other, minor nations also exists, generally modeled after an ancient society in the real world, examples such as Amatsu, which is modeled after ancient Japan,[6] and Louyang, which is modeled after ancient China.[7]

Areas from Norse mythology are also included, such as Niflheim, the land of the dead, and Valhalla, where players can become Transcendent Classes. New map content is constantly being added to game in the form of Episode updates.

Stat system

Strength (STR)

Strength affects the player's physical damage on a particular target; however, this only applies to melee classes that use short range weapons like swords, axes, and spears. A higher Strength level allows the player to deal more damage to the intended target when attacking. [8]

With each increase in Strength, the player's character will gain as follows: a 1-point increase in attack (which affects the physical damage dealt to an intended target) and an increase in the character's weight limit by 30. With every 10 Strength points added, the character also gains bonus attack points in addition to the usual 10 attack points. For classes that utilise long ranged weapons such as Archers, every 5 Strength points will grant a 1-point increase in the character's attack.[8]

Agility (AGI)

This stat affects a character's attack speed (the rate at which the player is able to attack) and also flee (the rate at which the player is able to dodge physical attacks). Higher Agility increases the player's attack speed as well as flee. Therefore, the player can attack more times per second and has a higher chance of avoiding physical attacks from opponents, as compared to another character with lower Agility. This stat is considered an important stat for ranged classes like the Archer class; their weak build does not allow them to take many hits from opponents, so they have to be able to dodge attacks for better survivability. Increased attack speeds are also a must for the Archer class, for they are then able to launch many arrows at once at their target. With their long-ranged weapons, this enables the Archer class to quickly take down their target from afar.

Vitality (VIT)

Vitality is used to increase maximum HP, defense, resistance to many status effects and the effectiveness of healing items. Additionally at increments of VIT some magic defense and natural HP regeneration rate is increased.[8]

Increasing this stat will: Improve max HP by 1%, give approximately 0.8 VIT-based defense, improve resiliance by about 1% for the following status effects (Bleeding, Curse, Poison, Silence, Stun), and improve healing effect from items by 2%. Every 2 points of VIT add a little under 1 magic defense, while every 5 VIT improves HP regeneration by 1.[8]

Intelligence (INT)

Intelligence is a primary stat for spell casters, and this is used to increase their magic attack and magic defense. INT also increases maximum SP, SP restoration items' effectiveness, natural SP regeneration rate, and resistance to some status effects (different effects than vitality provides resistance against).[8]

Increasing this stat will: increase INT-based magic defense by 1, increase maximum SP regeneration by 1%, improve SP restoration items' effectiveness by 1%, and improve resistance to the following status effects (Blind, Sleep, Chaos) by about 2/3. For every 7 INT minimum magic attack is increased, and for every 5 Int maximum magic attack is increased.[8]

Dexterity (DEX)

Dexterity decides the player's accuracy with weapons. It also increases attack speed (requiring more stat points than AGI to increase attack speed by 1), as well as decreasing cast time of spells. It also reduces the min-max damage rate, allowing the player to do better average damage output, eventually almost always only doing top-end damage should you invest in DEX highly. As noted in STR description, bow, gun, whip and instrument users do not increase their damage through STR; they do it through DEX.[8]

DEX also has a close relationship with success rates with creation abilities such as weapon forging as a Blacksmith or making a potion as an Alchemist. Also, success rate of ability Steal (Thief's ability) depends on your DEX.[8]

Increasing this stat will: increase damage from bows, guns, whips, and instrument attacks (maximum and minimum damage) by 1 in addition to bonus damage every 10 total DEX; chance to land a hit on an enemy, or Hit, increased by 1; cast time reduced by 1/150 (150 DEX = Instant cast); increase minimum damage of attacks (amount varies dependent on the weapons level); along with many class specific benefits.[8]

Luck (LUK)

This stat increases critical hit rate, increases perfect dodge, reduces the chance of enemies landing a critical attack on the player, slightly increases attack, and provides slight resistance to all status effects.[8]

Job system

Jobs are one of the most important aspects of Ragnarok Online, as the job a player chooses will have profound implications on his or her strengths and weaknesses, both in a party and outside of one. The job system initially consisted of 13 classes, which has increased to over 50 via several updates. Each class specializes in certain skills corresponding to archetypes in a role-playing game. Additionally, some equipment are exclusive to particular classes, altering the play style of such characters.

All players start in the game's first class, the novice. Novices are, as their name implies, largely a tutorial class built for allowing new players to get the general feel of the game. Upon reaching a certain level (dependent on their desired job), players can change to one of six first classes, or choose one of the expanded classes, along with Super Novices. Upon reaching another level goal, first classes can then change into one of two second classes. Once the player reaches base level 99 and job level 50, they can elect to "rebirth" their character, and relevel as a transcendent class, which has more skills and a larger number of status points to work with, although the experience curve is much higher.

The Korean servers have added a level 3 job class that can be taken from either level 2 or a transcendent level 2 class. If the player skips rebirth and goes directly into the 3rd jobs, the skills and stat bonuses that come with rebirth are lost forever in exchange for reaching the final stage faster.

A player will change jobs multiple times over the course of playing, though the number of changes will be determined by choices made by the player.[9]

The following table transcribes currently available jobs and their progression(s):

First Class

Swordsman

The Swordsman is the most basic melee class in Ragnarok Online. Specializing in one-handed/two-handed swords or one-handed/two-handed spears, the Swordsman class functions best using its skills such as "Bash" to deal direct damage to enemies. Also, the Swordsman class makes the best "tank" of the first class characters, with its "Increase HP Recovery" and "Provoke" skills which respectively allow it to heal itself over time and to taunt an enemy to attack them. The Swordsman class can change into a Knight or a Crusader when reaching job level 40.[9]

Acolyte

The Acolyte is the standard support class in Ragnarok Online. It is the only one of the first-class characters with a healing ability. The Acolyte also may buff itself or others with skills such as "Increase Agility", "Blessing", and "Angelus". Furthermore, the Acolyte class, through its "Divine Protection", "Demon Bane", and "Signum Crucis" skills functions effectively against fighting the Undead. The Acolyte class progresses to either Priest or Monk.[9]

Mage

The Mage class is the basic offensive spell-caster in Ragnarok Online. Players may become this job in the Magic City, Geffen. This class specializes in elemental damage such as Cold Bolt, Fire Bolt, and Lightning Bolt; the Mage can deal considerable damage to enemies. The Mage is usually used as a ranged fighter with its spell casting. Most of its leveling attributes would consist mostly with INT and DEX. (INT for more magical attack power and DEX for a faster cast time). The job class progresses into either Wizard or Sage for stronger magic abilities.[9]

Thief

The Thief class focuses on close-combat fighting like the Swordsman but can also deal damage from afar like an Archer, by utilizing a bow. However, unlike the Swordsman which uses its high defense to absorb attacks, the Thief class uses its skills and high agility to dodge enemy attacks. With the skill "Double Attack," the Thief class has a chance to strike twice with each attack whenever a dagger is equipped. The Thief class may also learn the ability to steal from enemies as well as go into a stealth-like state with the skill "Hiding." The Thief class progresses into either Assassin or Rogue.[9]

Merchant

The Merchant class provides the backbone of the Ragnarok Online economy. Merchants may purchase a cart to carry additional items with them, as well as may open up street vendor shops with the "Vending" skill. The Merchant class also may purchase items from shops at a discounted rate, as well as may sell items to shops for higher prices, thanks to the "Discount" and "Overcharge" skills. Merchants also possess fighting skills, with the ability to take their cart into battle with the "Cart Revolution" skill, which deals additional damage if the cart is full of heavy items. The Merchant can progress into either Blacksmith or Alchemist.[9]

Archer

The Archer, as its name suggests, specializes in attacking with a bow and arrow. Its skills allow the Archer to attack from further away, as well as to fire two arrows at once with the "Double Strafing" skill. The Archer skill "Improve Concentration" allows the Archer to temporarily increase its dexterity and agility stats as well as detect hidden enemies in a small area. The Archer class progresses into either Hunter or Bard for male characters and Dancer for female characters.[9]

Taekwon

The Taekwon class specializes in fighting without a weapon and focuses on kicking skills. These skills function uniquely as they are required to have a stance associated with a kick technique occur beforehand, which will happen at random during attack. They are able to change their element (for attacking) at will with their skill "Warm Wind". Each level of "Warm Wind" allows Taekwon to use a different element ranging from fire to even ghost and holy. This, in turn, allows them to deal massive damage on monsters by using the monster's elemental weakness. The Taekwon class can progress into either the Soul Linker or the Star Gladiator/Taekwon Master class.[9]

Ninja

The Ninja class specializes in fighting with ninja daggers, Shurikens, Kunais, and ninjutsu. They deal decent physical damage and magical damage to enemies which makes the versatile when facing monsters that have either high defense or high magic defense. The ninja can do massive damage with the skill "Killing Strike" which consumes all except one of the Ninja's HP and convert it into damage.[9]

Gunslinger

The Gunslinger class specializes in shooting from far away with guns. Being the only class that can equip guns they are able to out range almost every other class. the gun-type weapons are further broken down into sub categories of pistols, rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers and gatling guns. Some skills requires a certain gun to work while others can be used with any gun. Certain Gunslinger skills require coins which are obtained by the skill "Coin Flip" the coins also increase the damage done by the Gunslinger. Despite lacking further job opportunities, the array of unique arsenal and their differing characteristics makes the Gunslinger a flexible class for building upon differently, compared to the many other classes.[9]

Second Classes

Swordsman Second Class Options

Knight

The Knight class is an advanced form of the Swordsman class - with greater strength and HP, the Knight is able to take on tougher enemies that a Swordsman previously could not. The Knight is able to boost its attack speed when it is equipped with a two-handed sword using the skill "Two Hand Quicken" and is able to use an improved version of the skill "Bash", "Bowling Bash" which not only hits and knocks back the target but also does damage to all enemies the target collides with. The Knight can further advance into the Lord Knight class after going through the Rebirth process.[9]

Crusader

The Crusader is the other alternative form of the Swordsman class, bolstering even more HP and defense than the Swordsman class, it makes for the definitive "tank" of the second class characters. Whereas the Knight further uses hard-hitting weapons: the two-handed swords and spears, the Crusader class instead makes creative use of the shield as both means of offense and defense with skills "Smite", "Shield Boomerang", "Guard" and "Shield Reflect". Having affiliation with the church of Midgard, it also brings along various skills associated with the Acolyte - including "Heal". The Crusader also has the ability to mount a PecoPeco with the same skill as the Knight. The Crusader can further advance into the Paladin class after going through the Rebirth process. [9]

The Monk has access to "Summon Spirit Sphere" that allows the monk to perform numerous skills that require a certain number of Spirits, these skills are "Occult Impaction", "Throw Spirit Sphere", "Fury", "Mental Strength", "Snap", and "Guillotine Fist". Licensing

While Ragnarok Online is both developed and run by Gravity in South Korea, its various official overseas versions are licensed and run by regional ventures. This has led to a multitude of regional differences in the game, such as localized or translated text, special in-game events, and the payment model.

P2P servers

The original payment model, pay to play, is still in use by all regional versions. Depending on the version, users can pay by a monthly subscription or buy pre-paid cards.

Kafra Shop

Microtransactions and virtual freemium shops have become an increasingly favored revenue stream over monthly subscriptions for online multiplayer games, especially in the Asian MMO market. As such, the Kafra Shop (an Item Mall) was added to iRO (International Ragnarok Online) on June 19, 2007. Users are able to purchase Kafra Credit Points with U.S. dollars as a currency for the special items limited to the Kafra Shop.

This service appears on most other localized servers of Ragnarok Online such as jRO (Japanese Ragnarok Online), idRO (Indonesian Ragnarok Online), pRO (Philippine Ragnarok Online), rRO (Russian Ragnarok Online) and kRO (Korean Ragnarok Online), using the currency of the respective countries for points. In addition, upgraded forms of normal equipment can be rented using Kafra Points.[11]

F2P servers

There are official "Free To Play" servers where players can play Ragnarok Online free of charge, with a few differences in game play. Major differences are the limited use of the Kafra Teleport service, upgrading weapons and armor never have a "safe zone" in which you cannot break the Weapon/Armor, items have had their costs changed or been removed entirely from the game, the Acolyte skill Teleport has been modified, and prices on certain NPC items received a moderate increase. Notably, characters may be any job class, access any map, attain all skills, wear any gear, and progress to all levels without payment of microtransaction fees. Changes vary from server to server.

The use of free servers has resulted in a higher reliance on the Kafra Shop item mall for revenue stream. Many localized versions of Ragnarok Online have implemented free servers during 2007-2008.[12]

Ragnarok Mobile

Gravity Co. Ltd. released 8 separate games for the mobile phone allowing players to experience the game on the road.[13] Each version focuses on the main aspect of the acolyte, thief, merchant, mage, archer, and swordsmen class based on the version of the game they have. Players are able to advance their characters using the attributes STR, AGI, VIT, LUK, INT, and DEX. Though not placed in the server, players control their character and complete a series of quests or tasks. As players earn zeny, (the in-game currency), they are able to send the zeny to their real accounts. Along with that, a ranking is present where characters are ranked by the amount of zeny the character has.[14]
