History

Tabakhane is one of the 24 historic Neighborhoods of Nicosia within the walls.[3].[3] Tabakhane Mesjid (mosque) was in Pericleous Street (formerly Kalkancı Street), in the east of the Neighborhood. Many Turkish Cypriot tanners formerly worked at the tannery, after which the Neighborhood is named and lived nearby within Neighborhood. The last Turkish Cypriot living in this neighborhood died in 1960 (Nezire Hanım of Pericleous Street). By the 19th century the Tannery was located outside the walls, near Paphos Gate, in what is now the Municipal Gardens[3]
