[Untitled][edit]

I live in San Benancio, this is no hoax, simply trying to document the place in which I live. I notice Corral De Tierra has an entry and San Benancio is a place not unlike Corral De Tierra. It's part of the larger city of Salinas, however, for most residents, the area is simply known as "San Benancio". This was the setting for John Steinbeck's "Pastures of Heaven" and deserves to be recognized as seperate of Salinas or Corral De Tierra. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crenny (talkcontribs)

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any other reference to a place named San Benancio. There is a San Benancio Canyon, and a San Benancio Road, and a San Benancio Middle School, but the existence of these features does not lead to the conclusion that there is a community named San Benancio. Corral de Tierra can be found in the GNIS database; San Benancio cannot. I suspect the name may be used by locals to informally refer to the neighborhood around the canyon, but I don't think this local usage rises to the level of an actual place name as recognized by any authority. I'd send to AFD. Clearly not a hoax or vandalism so doesn't qualify for speedy deletion under CSD G3, but probably deletable due to lack of notability. Kmusser (talk) 23:36, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well you've successfully crushed my desire to contribute here. If you aren't from Salinas, then chances are you don't have any ability to debunk this or mark it as a lack of notability. San Benancio Canyon IS San Benancio, thats what it's called. People who live in San Benancio Canyon make a distinction from other places, as do people who live outside San Benancio Canyon. I can site documents I've found in the local library when the land was founded, when it was settled, how it's history goes back to 1834, but a couple of people on Wikipedia want to tell me it doesn't exist? This place sucks becuase of Nazis like all of you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crenny (talkcontribs) 15:36, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can cite documents - that's exactly what you need to do, this entire encyclopedia is based on the concept of verifiability. Saying "this place is important because I said so" will get deleted, saying "this place is important because it says so in document X" will stay. We love to get new contributors, but contributing requires research, not just writing what you know. Kmusser (talk) 15:57, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Then how about giving me more than a few hours to get all the references cited? I put this page up and within minutes it was a candidate for deletion? I've cited some references for now, I'm going back to the library this evening to collect others. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crenny (talkcontribs) 16:04, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I have no plans to nominate it for deletion myself. As an aside I think an article named San Benancio Canyon would survive AFD as it's supported by GNIS and could talk about both the physical canyon and the neighborhood located there. Kmusser (talk) 16:08, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
