Hume and Hovell came through current day Gundagai on their journey south then headed west and down that way. (This is why the Hume Highway - previously the Majors Line - then the Great Southern, is called what it is, as it used to go where Hume did). There were several 'offical' roads south. One went along the right hand bank of the Murrumbidgee a fair way, then down Yanco Creek to the Murray then either to Adelaide or Port Phillip from there; and one crossed over at Gundagai and went on the south/left bank about where the road goes now. Another road turns west at Gundagai and heads to Adelaide that way along the right bank of the Murrumbidgee. The current Hume Hwy used to be further west too as it followed Hume's route that Mitchell came back along. On H & H's return trip they went closer to Adelong then to Tumut. There is a bit of a riddle where they went that anyone who knows the country well can follow off their journal as they mention some very distinguishing features within that journal. Whatever, they did go where they went, then stuff got changed after.

They cam eback in a line that went through Adelong. They didnt go to Tumut at all. How do I know? I read their Journal.
