FWIW, Keighley apparently was one of the towns involved in the first recorded town twinning, dating to 1920 (the other twin was apparently a Poix in France, probably Poix-du-Nord). --Haruo 21:55, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Notable People

I've had a crack at tidying up the notable people section. It's still not the way it should be as more referencing is needed. But I think it looks better than it did.

Architecture

Evidently someone with a bone to pick with 1960s architecture and no familitary with NPOV wrote this section. It is thoroughly unacceptable for Wikipedia to take an editorial line that there was a "collective madness" or that certain buildings are "monstrosities". I don't know enough about architecture to fix this. Morwen - Talk 06:26, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it's been fixed now. The comments about the more modern buildings seem fairly neutral and objective. Not sure I'd fully agree with the description of the terraced houses being "cramped". They're normally spacious enough for a single occupier or a couple without kids.... And that's how a lot of people live these days, right? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.138.98.253 (talk) 16:57, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Borough of Keighley

As a schoolboy growing up in Keighley (Which was controlled by the West Riding County Council at the time) I seem to remember being told that when it was a town borough, Keighley's was the largest borough in the country in terms of area. This was because it encompassed a large number of outlying villages such as Howarth, Oxenhope and beyond. Can anybody shed any light on this matter?–DaveR —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 212.124.229.3 (talk) 15:56, 12 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Pronunciation of Keighley

Surely no one, other than someone with no knowledge of the town, would pronounce it as 'Keeg-ly'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.145.241.26 (talkcontribs) 09:53, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's pronounce "Keethli" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.38.51.119 (talkcontribs) 00:41, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Keighley (obviously)

I was wondering whether when it says that there are 7 mosques in Keighley, are they in normal buildings or have they got the traditional islamic style with the minarets?? it seems like a great place being near Leeds and Bradford. And big towns like Huddersfield and Halifax. Has it got good rail links though? bye 4 now. (Cokes360 23:10, 15 April 2007 (UTC))[reply]

It has a very good rail network. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.38.51.119 (talkcontribs) 00:19, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In response to the person posing the questions about the mosques, only two of these mosques are purpose built as far as I know, (the big mosque on Emily Street, formally known as the Markazi Jamia Masjid, and a small, single storey building in Cark Road, called the Ghosiyah Mosque) The five others occupy disused churches and, in the case of a small mosque in East Avenue, a couple of converted terraced houses.

The Emily Street mosque is currently undergoing a major programme of extension work. This is being entirely funded from the pockets of the Muslim community. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.43.153.243 (talkcontribs) 12:00, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ext links

I reverted this edit as the links don't appear to actually have much content in them. --Oscarthecat 08:18, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Zoe Lucker

When you follow the link to Zoe's Wiki entry, it states that she was born in Huddersfield. This is repeated in her IMDB entry too. So who's right?! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nastydonkey (talkcontribs) 07:51, 2 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

The gang wars

Here goes.... Some may not be wildly happy with this, but I've added a small piece on the gang wars which hit Keighley a few years back and left four local guys dead in only five months. I thought this was a significant (albeit highly unpleasant) enough event in the town's history to warrant a mention. However, I do want to keep some sort of perspective here so I've kept the article very short, put it right at the bottom of the page and I don't think I've sensationalised anything. I've referenced an old Telegrah and Argus article which summarises the conflict quite well. However, it inaccurately dates the Qadir Ahmed murder as July 2002 instead of February 2002, so I've corrected that myself. Anyway, there you go. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.156.138.238 (talk) 19:49, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comment Is it really necessary to refer to this "Gang War" as a bloody turf war?

--- —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zolstijers (talkcontribs) 02:25, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

With respect, I'm not quite sure why you have a problem with this description of the conflict. It involved two different groups of criminals, heavily involved in drug-related activity, who violently competed for territory to allow them to sell their 'goods' - hence the word 'turf'. Four people being murdered in a medium sized town in such a short space of time is enough to qualify for the adjective 'bloody'. And as for the use of the word 'war'. Well the standard figure of speech IS 'turf war'. 'Turf fight' or 'turf squabble' doesn't really sound right, does it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.138.98.253 (talk) 15:19, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

--- Turf squabble sounds much better than "turf war" as turf is an American slang word and war constitutes as a large bloody fight in which thousands of people die. Zolstijers (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 22:24, 5 October 2008 (UTC).[reply]

Problem with the Sharpe Connection article

Could be a job for the admin' people to sort out (or anyone else more adept at Wikipedia than myself) The footnote referencing the Sharpe connection segment does not work when clicked on. There does seem to have been a genuine news story published on the internet about this, so it's not a fake footnote, but the link itself isn't functioning at the moment. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.138.98.253 (talk) 11:55, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good job - thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.138.98.253 (talk) 15:43, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Keighley neighbourhoods

Would anyone violently object to a new sub section listing Keighley's neighbourhoods? I've noticed this feature on other detailed Wikipedia profiles of British towns. Keighley may be only a medium sized town but it has quite a diverse range of areas which I thought would be worth listing (it could go under the geography section). If no one has objected to this after about a month I'll get on with it and make the additional entry myself. I've lived in Keighley since 2005 and know the town pretty well. Cheers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.138.98.253 (talk) 15:55, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comment - this usually causes problems with people adding/removing them as they think areas are in or not. Also difficult to source and a list is not good for GA or FA articles. Keith D (talk) 22:38, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

O.K. - fair enough. Two days ago I noticed on the Wikipedia article for the town of Blackburn that the neighbourhoods section has been recommended for removal, to ensure the article can receive a better rating. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.138.98.253 (talk) 14:27, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you are interested in improving the article take a look at some of the featured articles for UK places such as Manchester, Oldham and Sheffield for ideas, also the guidelines at How to write about settlements should give pointers as to what needs doing to improve this article. Nice Pictures!

Cheers to whoever started the gallery section - this is a good start. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.138.98.253 (talk) 08:10, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The images need captions so we know what they are. Keith D (talk) 11:23, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
