Simek quote[edit]

"[W]hatever the case, there were sacred woods long before there were temples and altars" is a quite uncontroversial statement, and I may switch the reference to de Vries in the meantime, but I can't find it on p. 335 in Simek's Dictionary of Northern Mythology, and after looking at Worldcat, can't see any indication of a revision between 1993, when the text I have originated (2000 paperback printing) and 2004. I wonder whether the digital edition was silently changed? The entry for "Sacred groves" seems to be missing; there's a pointer to it at the start of the "Trees" entry on p. 335, but it doesn't seem to be in the book. Since "Sacred kingship" is more usually "Sacral kingship", I'm wondering whether that marks the editing error, and I have a suspicion that content may have been slipped in under "Trees" in the digital edition, which I can't access. Unfortunately I don't have access to the German original either, but more recent works in German by Simek on Germanic cult practices, which I can see online, do say similar things. If anyone has a version of the book that has that sentence, we should make a note of the fact it isn't in all editions. Yngvadottir (talk) 14:03, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

For the quote, try page 310 (under "temples"). And I share your frustration over the entry/edition weirdness! :bloodofox: (talk) 08:07, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
