Manjappada Kerala Blasters Fans or simply known as Manjappada (English: The Yellow Army) is the organised supporting group of the Kochi based club Kerala Blasters FC which participates in the Indian Super League, the top tier of Indian football.[1] [2][3]They were founded in 2014 and is one of the largest football fan clubs in India.[4][5]Manjappada won the Indian Sports Honours's "Fan Club of the Year" award twice in 2017 and 2020.[6][7] [8]They were also awarded by 2019 Asian Cup Organising Committee for their support at the 2019 AFC Asian Cup and the India national football team .[9]Currently they have different wings in all the 14 districts of Kerala and other 12 states of India. Keralites residing in 44 different countries around the world are also a part of the club.[10]

History

Inception and early days: 2014–2016

Manjappada was founded through a Facebook page on 27 May 2014 with three founding members. Kerala Blasters had an average attendance of 49,000 during the inaugural season of Indian Super League.[11] By 2015, Manjappada started to co-ordinate more fans under one umbrella.[12] [13]They played a crucial role for giving intense support for the Blasters during the 2015 season despite the team's poor performance in the league.[14] [15]During the 2015 ISL Season blasters recorded with an average attendance of 52,000, which is still the highest in the history of Indian Super League. Most of the matches had an attendance of more than 60,000.[16][17]

Growth into ultras: 2016–present

By 2016, Manjappada became more organised and expanded through a WhatsApp group consisting of 50 members initially. With time, fans connected from all 14 district of Kerala through WhatsApp which led to the state chapters across India. Keralites residing in 44 countries joined the fan club and are active members in the international groups.[18][19] Because of this, Manjappada also has one of the largest travelling fans in the country.[20][21] By 2018, Manjappada evolved into an ultras group as they started to use flares and smokes during the matches.[22][23] [24]In 2018 they even started a boycott campaign.[25]One of their organised effort was witnessed when the Manjappada members from the 14 wings across Kerala arrived in 41 buses at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Kochi) for the 2019 season opener against ATK on 20 October 2019.[26][27].[28]

Manjappada also ocassionally displayed tifos at various matches.[30] The most famous tifo came during their 2018-19 season opener against Mumbai City on 5 October 2018. "In Unity Lies Our Greatness" displayed by the tifo as it was a tribute to fishermen who saved thousands of lives during 2018 Kerala floods.[31] In the following year, they unvieled another tifo displaying "Rise Like A Phoenix". It was unveiled during their season opener against ATK on 20 October 2019.[32]

Other initiatives

Supporting Indian National Team

Manjappada is also known for the support that they give to the India national football team .They join hands with the Blue Pilgrims which is the fan club of Indian Football Team during their matches. Manjappada has different wings across the Asian continent. When the Indian team comes to play their matches outside India, Manjappada members are often seen giving support to them along with the Blue Pilgrims.[33] Indian Coach Igor Štimac even mentioned their effort after they came to the Airport in Qatar to welcome the Indian team ahead of the AFC Asian Cup 2019.[34]

Social activities

  • Manjappada is involved in various social welfare activities. During the 2018 Kerala Floods,they supplied relief materials across the flood-affected areas.[35]
  • In 2020 they organised a paid online football gaming tournament to collect funds for the Chief Minister's relied fund against COVID-19.[36][37]
  • They initiated 'Save the Kochi turf campaign' to save the FIFA approved pitch of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Kochi)[38]
  • Started "stop cyber abuse" campaign against the cyber abuse towards players.[39]
