Revision as of 23:21, 27 September 2010

    • Note: I will be Upstate New York filming an episode of Star Trek: New Voyages from Sept 25, 2010 to Oct 4, 2010. I will have limited Internet access (evenings or late at night), so please allow for delays in responding (sorry, I'd tried to cancel my attendance, but they dont really have a replacement for me, and I just got informed 15:20, 22 September 2010 (UTC) that I really needed to attend this shoot).
      • If you are one of my WikiFriends/(talk page stalker)s, please feel free to help out my adoptees if I dont answer in a speedy fashion (or even if I do).
      • If you are one of my adoptees, it's a wonderful gang that "stalks" my talk page, so please treat them with respect and listen to their advice and help as you would mine.

  • If you are a (talk page stalker), you are welcome here, and any help you give is greatly appreciated.
  • If you think I've done something wrong (marked your edit as vandalism?) please check your talk page for an explanation first. If you still don't understand why, then please click here to leave me a message - it is possible I've made a mistake, and will freely admit it.
  • I will reply on whatever page the conversation initiates on, as I prefer to keep conversations all in one place but will alert you on your talk page of new responses if the conversation is taking place here, so you'll know when I've responded.
  • If I have written something on your talk page, I 'll be watching it, so feel free to reply there if you wish. If you prefer to reply here that's fine too.
  • Threads older than 30 days are archived automatically by MiszaBot
  • Currently mentoring two other editors: User:Theoneinblue and User:AJona1992. Please let me know if you think there's something in particular you think I can do to help them along.

Reversal of edits to Sakshat

Hi.. you just reversed my edits to Sakshat ... Please refer the video - http://www.ndtv.com/news/videos/video_player.php?id=157534 NDTV is a well known and respected Indian television channel and the Gadget Guru edition in the link shows the working prototype of Sakshat. It also shows it running the Android OS, playing video and the man featured is the HRD minister of India, Kapil Sibal who launched the device earlier. Please reconsider the report of "vandalism" - thats not true. Thanks...

Also - the citation I removed was that the device used Linux, when in fact it is Android - I just used the video reference because it was the more recent report - and we can see it running Android. The older citation is incorrect. (even though it is from a credible source - the known information has changed...)

Responses left on user's talk page; consisting of my apologies with me personally reverting back to his revision. Information added took a lot of digging to come up with due to the change (from Linux to AndroidOS) was just announced: this made the original edit look like adding incorrect information (since all easily findable articles stated Linux). Re: Friendly still? Talkpage edits?

I am not an admin, so I can't remove access to anything (forward your question to me to User:Xeno or another admin online for their view), but I think Friendly access should be updated to give the newbie getting the Friendly note a link to the Village Pump or the Helpdesk instead of Inka's talk page until Inka has some more experience. Inka's access to TWINKLE has been blacklisted, but somehow Inka has gotten around that (possibly a cache issue), so that definitely should be stopped as some of the TWINKLE warnings are not completely correct as previously stated at ANI. I would watch the user's edits to make sure nothing else comes up, but don't follow too close, so you aren't accused of stalking. I honestly believe that Inka, with a mentor, could become a good and valuable user, but they have shot down all suggestions of mentors. - NeutralhomerTalk • 03:57, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that's the worry, that "do what he sees fit". Since he is a newbie (though he claims he isn't), I and others feel that he doesn't know the ropes yet to know what to do in certain situations. It is really out of my hands. I tried to help, but was kinda "turned on" when I supported Fastily's decline of Inka's Rollbackers request and then tonight taken to ANI for warning Inka to stop harrassing Fastily about Rollbackers access. Sadly, I see this, in the not to distant future, spinning out of control for Inka and a block for him if he doesn't learn the ropes soon. - NeutralhomerTalk • 04:19, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Status: Online

Sure, no problem on the questions, always glad to help. You can find the Status application at Template:Statustop. There are instructions there. A note though, when you do add the program to your account (which can be removed at anytime), you will need to refresh your cache. Information on how to do that (per browser) can be found at WP:BYC. If you have any other questions, my talk page is always open. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 04:23, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

[1] How is this vandalism? Jmlk17 04:47, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Long involved story where user has been advised to stick to editing articles as opposed to (as editor originally had on their talk page) doing "sysop like stuff" which involved multiple ANIs, various of us trying to clean up improper usage of TW, editor being blocked from using TW and so on. I had already left a note on Xeno's page (since he was involved in at least one of the ANIs) regarding this so he could review it and decide if it was appropriate, if action/discussion needed to be taken with Inka, or if action/discussion needed to be taken with me.
Side note: I did not leave a warning via a warning template on the editor's page - just a question asking why they revised it (based on the fact that they cannot even use TW properly and have no way of knowing what vandalism level the template should be at). Anyway, in closing, due to previous conversations about what the editor should constrain themselves to doing (and the editor ignoring that), I felt it was appropriate. If you think it was not, please let me know (and accept my apologies). Best, RobertMfromLI | User Talk 04:55, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. I can totally see what you're talking about now; I probably would have done the same. My apologies; I just saw it on my watchlist and was curious. Thanks! Jmlk17 04:59, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
ANY time (and no apologies needed). If I've done wrong, I always want to know. If I've done right, it's always nice to know that my interpretation of things was correct. So, always open to anyone asking why I did anything. Thanks again (and thanks, for (as always) being polite in your question and response). 2 questions

1.Where do the experienced vandal fighters go to fight vandalism?

2.How do you revert without twinkle, (do it manually)? Regards,--Inka 888 22:06, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Inka, thanks for asking.
  1. 1 - it depends on the person's preferences and/or experience. Many use Huggle, but many also use Twinkle. If you look at recent changes, you will see that on some of the vandal reverts it may say (HG) or (TW) in the edit summary. More often, those notes are added to the editor's warning summary (which shows up in recent changes as well if no filter is enabled). There are other tools besides HG and TW, but they require rollback right. Personally, though I use Huggle from time to time, I prefer Twinkle. I've got a LOT of experience fighting vandalism, but I DONT have much experience here - probably only 1200 reverts of clear vandalism.
  1. 2 - reverting without twinkle is somewhat difficult. It will really depend on the circumstances and it definitely requires looking at the diffs carefully and in detail. The diffs have a + or - next to each section showing if text was added or subtracted, but that's not always indicative of what fully went on (if someone changes a section and inserts more text into it, then the diff might show two additions and one subtraction. One of those additions will actually NOT be an addition, but the same text being placed someplace else). Then, if it's something small (someone inserted a bunch of junk characters on a line, or changed a word), I can either manually fix it, or undo it (I dont know if you have access to that though). If it's a big one, for instance page blanking (and one cant undo or revert it) one can open the earlier version and the newer version and copy & paste the proper text from the earlier version into the newer one. Tedious.
The remaining problem here is issuing a warning when one does not have Twinkle. That requires very very good knowledge of the warning templates, which is why I asked you all those questions on your talk page, for instance, what uw-ics1 is. Even with a list of all the warning templates, one still has to know how to use them. Like we already talked about, it is very very important to make sure the article vandalized is indicated - both for the editor who made the mistake/vandalism, as well as for other editors or admins so they can easily find what the editor did (they can check the user's contributions, but if the user's got a lot of mixed contributions, (a bunch good and a bunch bad), it makes it very time consuming. It also leaves the editor with grounds for appealing a block. Let's say the editor gets 4 warnings with no page mentions, but has also edited a bunch of other articles (good, bad or otherwise)... "I saw the warnings, but I had no idea what I was doing wrong... I got 4 warnings on 20 edits, so I figured I was doing everything ok now"
Anyway, hope that helps, and feel free to ask me anything that comes to mind. You can always be assured that if I dont know the answer, I'll gladly find it for you or find someone who I am sure knows the correct answer. I'm very big on teamwork, and one thing I do know is that no matter how long I (or probably anyone else) is here, there's always things to learn - so it's nice when there's other people to ask. :-) Best, RobertMfromLI | User Talk 00:07, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank's, I was wondering if there was another spot were users watch for vandalism besides Recent changes, and i was also wondering how to revert without using an anti vandalism tool such as twinkle? --Inka 888 01:35, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Homophobia

The "some people" is directly from the article, and as such you may want to edit that, however the some people is referring to people such as those who created that study - obviously they thought that was the case hence the need for conducting such a study. The lead should be a summary of the page and this section is within the page. Additionally, generally on wikipedia the norm is no reverting without discussion, rather than discussion before editing -Javsav (talk) 14:18, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Javsav, I am not disputing the edit itself. Rather, the wording (and yes, perhaps the rest of the article can also use some work), and more specifically, as noted on the article's talk page it states: "The subject of this article is controversial and content may be in dispute. Please discuss substantial changes here before making them, supplying full citations when adding information, and consider tagging or removing uncited/unciteable information."
...which I am sure you probably missed, since it's on the talk page. Hence, the note on your talk page. So, again, the edit itself, if worded appropriately, isn't so much the issue. The article being contentious, and flagged (though on the Talk Page) for discussion before addition is. So... let's talk about it on the article's talk page and work for a consensus for inclusion. How do i get the information regarding my fathers instrument sale to steve harris and his consequent guitar painting fact to be confirmed or cited so it can go into the iron maiden page? or even steve harris' page? my email ...@hotmail.com you can find me on facebook through the email address. many thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.197.150.129 (talk) 17:23, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've added some helpful links to the userpage located at User_talk:90.197.150.129 for you. A few of the most important are WP:RS and WP:COI and WP:NPOV and WP:BLP and WP:OR, though I suggest you read up on others as well. Also, I suggest that perhaps you register an account, which will make communications on Wikipedia based stuff easier. I will send you an email, but it will only be to let you know I have responded to you here - I prefer talking about mine and other's actions here only on Wikipedia itself for transparency reasons so the whole community can review and help out. I've also removed most of your email address from this page to prevent spam bots from harvesting it. Best, ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 18:09, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

U.S. English is not preferred!

The manual of style says The English Wikipedia does not prefer any major national variety of the language. Within the English Wikipedia no variety is considered more correct than another. Saros136 (talk) 21:04, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Except for two points, unless I am misinterpreting this: (1) the article was a mish-mash of both, (see WP:MOS right below the section you indicated), and (2) the term used in US English is "check card" (such as "The Visa Check Card") which is a term somewhat akin to a name. I'd presume that, though "check card" is not a proper name, that wording guidelines may still be similar to if it were, especially considering "Visa Check Card" is a proper name? Your thoughts? Best, ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 21:17, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Either way, I dont care too much which version is used (if consistent), but I thought the inconsistency was somewhat jarring (and against MOS), and that other wording in US English made the choice of cheque seem weird (it was easier to make all check/cheque entries into check than to make them all consistently cheque and then change other words that had US/UK variations from their US variation to the UK variation. More than willing to follow your lead on how to handle it. ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 21:50, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Robert!

How are you doing?

I will be very thankful if you help me out! I see that you are a programmer and that you like Star Trek. I don´t really know about Star Trek, but I will love to know more about programming and doing my best at writing articles for Wikipedia. My first job is to contribute with the articles on Municipalities of Oaxaca, so I think I will be reaching out for help later.

Thanks so much!! Zaira Theoneinblue (talk) 19:17, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Zaira! Thanks for choosing me as your mentor. I've updated yours and my userpage to reflect that. I'm in the Eastern US Time Zone and am a night person who spends much time online, so I am usually readily available. My online status on the top of my Userpage and Talk Page is usually accurate, so if you see "Online" or "Available" I should usually respond pretty quickly, while if you see "Around" you can generally expect a response from me within a couple of hours. Let me know what types of contributions you are expecting to make or how I can help you in the process and I'll be glad to give you what assistance/tips I can. Well, I never like the use of the word "things". I'd also put a serial comma in the list "music, religion or science". You have the word "don't" without an apostrophe in multiple places. Your capitalization in headers is not consistent. It's weird having "not ever" bolded; I'd recommend either bolding "do not ever", "not", or "ever". That's what I came up with while looking through it. Useight (talk) 18:34, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re

As we speak, yes I need some help with Amor Prohibido (song). I nominated the article for a GA, but theres a ref error, how can I fix this problem? And the reviewer asked me to fix my grammar issues with the music video section. Can you tell me, in other ways of stating that section? Thanks. AJona1992 (talk) 01:07, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looking into it. Quick check seems that the ref tag or ref is simply broken. Will let you know what I find. -R ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 01:10, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. AJona1992 (talk) 01:17, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker)I took a look as well and found the problem. The reason that is coming up is because there isn't a reference called ""Selena Remembered"". That ref link has nothing to link back to. What you need to do is correct the first instance of that reference with a main {{cite web}} link and then all the other secondary ref links will fall in line. - NeutralhomerTalk • 01:20, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Look at Ref 12 (directly after "originally written about Selena's grandparents.") and then check Ref 15 (directly after "concert as her first musical number.")
The message give: "Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; no text was provided for refs named Selena_Remembered; see [[Help:Cite errors/Cite error references no text]] means various things, but in this case, it means the named ref was never defined. See "Issues and Resolution" on that page. Basically, you have to use the named ref first with the appropriate link. After that, you can call that ref by name.
Let me know if that works it out for you. Best, ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 01:22, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just felt you should be fully informed about the change and the results of the ANI. Glad to see you back and hope things work out smoothly. Hii! Robert

SO I have two adopters!!! yeiii!

ok. I did my first paragpraph ever in wikipedia. I did it like four times, but I don't have much information to make a perfect paragraph. So if I find information on other pages and I do a new paragraph can you be so kind to help put the citation? Well for know I think I will continue on reading. Thanks! BTW the name of the article is San ANdres Lagunas Zaira Theoneinblue (talk) 02:23, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Most definitely! Let me know when you need help. Also, the best way to work on a new article is in your userspace. To do that, simply go to your User Page and put a /ArticleName after it (in the URL bar), and then hit enter. From there you will be prompted to create a new page. So... for this article, you could go here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Theoneinblue/SanAndresLagunas

It will then ask if you want to create the article... click on that link, and plug away!

Hey can you help me out on this The Bad Girls Club (season 5) I keep having to delete the information on Christina and Ashley (duration of cast) EVERYDAY and almost all the time. Can you tell me how should I tell the person to stop or better yet can you ask that person to stop the episode hasn't aired yet and theres no sources that indicates that they arrive at the same time in one episode. Thanks AJona1992 (talk) 21:54, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, first, no more reverts/deletes. That becomes edit warring even if their info is wrong. I'd leave a polite note on their userpage explaining that until the information is verifiable (an announcement online with the info, or the episode airing), to please not put it in. Very politely, and ask them to bring discussion to the article's talk page if they wish to talk about it. ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 21:56, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Adopt-a-user reminder

Hello, I have completed a general cleanup of the adopter information page for the adopt-a-user project, located here. During my cleanup, I have removed several inactive and retired users. In order to provide interested adoptees with an easy location to find adopters, it is essential that the page be up-to-date with the latest information possible. Thus:

  • If you are no longer interested in being an adopter, please remove yourself from the list.
  • If you are still interested, please check the list to see if any information needs to be updated or added - especially your availability. Thank you.
  • You are receiving this message because you are listed as an adopter here.

AJona's mentorship restrictions

Hey Rob, saw the extended restriction that have been proposed and added on to my original ones. You mentioned that you've let AJona know about these, but I can't seem to find that, onwiki at least. I think if you've done it offwiki, you should do it onwiki too so there's no chance of any claim that the user "wasn't told" or "didn't know". Regards. --Strange Passerby (talkcstatus) 05:07, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

checkuser

i have already been checkusered and i talk to User:MuZeMike the checkuser via email and he said that it is ok if i use this account and i explained 2 him that it is a legitimate new account, becos i do not wish to use my old account due to various reason that i can not tell you becos it is not ur business. U should talk to MuZeMike before u waist time with more investigation thx. but it is not to evade a block or ban or things like this. bye.--Bad edits r dumb (talk) 05:43, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I will check with an uninvolved checkuser of my own choosing, and thanks for the indication that you performed some action or actions on your previous account that has forced you to use this one. ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 05:45, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I did not say I was forced to use this one. You r paraphrasing incorrectly and u are wrong. I prefer to use this account at the present time becos there r reasons i choose not to use my other account. it is really non of ur business.--Bad edits r dumb (talk) 05:48, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Considering your disruptive behavior, I believe it is the community's business. I will bring this to AN/I and request a different checkuser to verify your claims. Not that I dont believe you, and definitely not that I dont trust User:MuZemike in this matter (though he has not publicly said anything in your defense in this or other matters), but in doing so, perhaps we can put this issue that you just brought up to bed in a manner satisfactory to everyone. By not involving MuZemike, who you claim you have off-wiki conversations with (that the community is not privy to) and asking for a different checkuser, it allows a level of transparency that will hopefully make everyone involved happy with. So again, assuming the validity of your claims, this will only help you. The only way it would do the opposite is if your claims were untrue, or your portrayal of MuZemike's conversations and support of you were incorrect. I'll assume good faith, try to help you this one last time, and let uninvolved admins and checkusers decide. I simply mentioned the consequences of block evasion on the off chance it was relevant, as (you) coming clean about such may ensure less of a penalty than it being found out during a checkuser review and AN/I discussion. But again, I will assume good faith, and let uninvolved admins and checkusers review this, which will hopefully help you. ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 06:00, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK I requested a checkuser on myself on the request for sockpuppetry investigation page. hopefully, you will be satisfy.--Bad edits r dumb (talk) 06:41, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Link please, and no. A review of the previous accounts to ensure that (1) you are not a sockpuppet, (2) you are not evading a ban or block, (3) your current block should not be extended due to your previous activities that are hidden because you are using a different account and (4) confirmation that future repercussions are warranted if you are disruptive again.
Additionally, I note, that when you want to, you are fully capable of complete coherent sentences with proper grammar. That seems indicative that your previous actions were indeed intentional and done in an effort to be disruptive. Best, ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 06:46, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK I ask them to run a checkuser, but they DECLINE. they say they have no reason not to believe wut i say. So you can ask for a checkuser yourself, hopefully they will ACCEPT, because when i tried to ask for one they did not ACCEPT.--Bad edits r dumb (talk) 06:49, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please dont misrepresent what happened there. It is still in awaiting clerk approval, and if it is declined, it will be because you stated no reason for it. I will file an appropriate AN/I request. It will address all the points I have brought up. Thanks. ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 06:52, 26 September 2010 (UTC) [reply]

Nope. It was declined. I was disappointed, but it is wut it is.--Bad edits r dumb (talk) 06:54, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations#Bad_edits_r_dumb was declined? Still says awaiting clerk review. I expect it will be though, since you gave no reason for the checkuser. I wont make that mistake. I will file an AN/I. Not sure why you are trying to convince me they told you everything was ok? Who is "they"? A clerk hasnt even reviewed your incorrectly filed request. ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 06:58, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
hmmmm ur a funny guy. look at the clerk. he decline, but u can tattle on Bad edits r dumb on AN/I if u want to. I am tired of talking to u. I will fight some vandals and i will use TEMPLATES so I do not get in trouble. thx--Bad edits r dumb (talk) 07:03, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That aside, if you stop and read what i wrote on your userpage, you will see I even tried helping you with the template thing. Install Twinkle, and you can add your own personal note to each templated warning - while still including the correct warning. Please, check my example on your talk page. You can have the best of both worlds... the proper warning, but also with a personal message from you. If you weren't so busy trying to "fight" with me for no reason, you would have seen that I was trying to provide you exactly what you wanted, while adhering to the warning guidelines at the same time. Very interesting AN/I--intelati(Call) 20:50, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's the first AN/I I've been involved with that I have been attacked for proposing nothing be done to the other editor, compliment them twice in the proposal and clearly include an exclusion for the occassional accidental mistake. But, even with their repeat, intentional, mischaracterizations of everything I say and do, I still must propose what I think is right based on the actual topic of the AN/I (as opposed to in relationship to their actions towards me). Ah well... ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 20:57, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering here, why do you keep sticking up for him if he doesn't want your help? AJona1992 (talk) 21:15, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Because their recent contributions prove that they have "gotten the message" and are willing to contribute in good faith (which I believe is the main purpose of the AN/I - to get them to contribute in good faith and stop violating the issues that caused their previous ban). I suppose I could have instead reacted based on their treatment of me (and mischaracterizations of my statements and actions), but that is not what the AN/I is about. So, I chose (as I always try to (and hopefully always succeed at)) to act upon the situation at hand as opposed to whether or not they like me or are mischaracterizing my efforts. :-) ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 21:25, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
