Category:Byproducts

Nominator's rationale: To the extent that there is any need for this cat, it should be spelled with the hyphen, which is by far the more common spelling.

See this Ngram search, or do Google searches on the two spellings. Eric talk 22:55, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I won't argue with the conclusion, but Ngram viewer doesn't work well with hyphenated words, and the results it is giving aren't correct. Ike9898 (talk) 23:34, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I ran into that issue at first, but ended up learning a new Ngram trick when a sort-of error page came up that prompted me to wrap the term in parentheses (as opposed to quotation marks) to have the term be treated as a "composition". Eric talk 02:58, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • As creator of the category, support. The category is useful; by-products have a distinct set of characteristics and issues. Ike9898 (talk) 23:13, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:British expatriates in Guernsey

Nominator's rationale: Having checked Crown Dependencies, seems this is invalid, UK citizens and Crown dependency citizens can move freely Crowsus (talk) 21:31, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Ludum Dare video games

Nominator's rationale: The current title is a bit misleading, as almost none of those games have their current versions as part of Ludum Dare or are primarily notable for being on it. Rather, they merely originated from it at some point in their early history. Zerbu Talk 09:11, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Listify and Delete — cumbersome name, and we don't usually categorize by event or venue. Better an annotated referenced list in the Ludum Dare article.

Category:Buildings and structures in Alpine, Utah

Nominator's rationale: Small city (~10,000) with just 3 pages. Upmerge as above. –Aidan721 (talk) 16:24, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Marwanid dynasty

Nominator's rationale: merge/delete, only two articles in three categories. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:00, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: The state lasted around 100 years, and the categories mentioned are quite recent (< 3 months). Al-Andalusi (talk) 19:59, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Education in World War II

Nominator's rationale: soft merge per WP:SMALLCAT, currently only one article. By all means re-establish the category when more content about this topic is available. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:21, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Education by sector

Nominator's rationale: upmerge, redundant category layer with only two subcategories. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:16, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Asian sportspeople by ethnic or national origin

Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT recent proliferation of tiny categories with unusual and irrelevant hierarchical organization. Wikipedia:Category naming does not provide for by region encapsulating by country.
Summary: Convoluted tree, entangled with others, very few articles. Redundantly, Asians are of Asian descent. Surprisingly, Chinese are sometimes Asian or East Asian. There's no rhyme nor reason for this tree.

  • Delete with all other categories nominated before. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:50, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete  looks like categorization by “race.” —Michael Z. 17:07, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Scholars from the Ottoman Empire

Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer with only two subcategories. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:48, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

1789 United States presidential election

  • Propose renaming
Nominator's rationale: procedural nomination, an earlier speedy rename request was declined. The main article was only recently moved and without discussion, and therefore C2D doesn’t apply. If the discussion here does not lead to renaming the category then the article move should be reverted. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:40, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@1857a and Armbrust: pinging contributors to earlier speedy discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:40, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:States by power status

Nominator's rationale: merge, with many of these statuses it is arguable whether it concerns power status. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:50, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Wikipedia Trading card game members

Nominator's rationale: This may have served a purpose when it was created in 2009, but since Wikipedia:Trading card game has been inactive since circa 2011 it is now pointless. What's happening there is random fooling around that is close to the antithesis of what user categories should be for. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:51, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment This short-term WikiProject was a good-faith attempt to create a piece of merchandise for revenue and publicity at a time when both were in shorter supply than now. Theoretically, the participants might collaborate again in future but we, Wikipedia and the world of games have changed over the past 14 years. Certes (talk) 13:23, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Buildings and structures in the United States by state and city

Relevant history:
Category:Buildings and structures in the United States by city was renamed to Category:Buildings and structures in the United States by settlement in January 2010.
Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2010_January_31#Category:Buildings and structures in the United States by city
Category:Settlements was renamed to Category:Populated places (which in turn renamed the category above as well) in April 2010.
Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2010_April_17#Category:Settlements
Nominator's rationale: It only makes sense to replace city with populated place as "city" is not representative of the categories within. And it's counterintuitive to make an additional tree for towns/townships as well since it would worsen navigation. This also allows for existing split trees to be merged into a common branch to improve navigation. Lastly, it aligns the cats with the parent Category:Buildings and structures in the United States by populated place. –Aidan721 (talk) 04:39, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support — community consistency. (Pining for the days there were many eyes on categories.)
    William Allen Simpson (talk) 09:16, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment – Isn't there a concern that users would assume "populated place" to mean any populated place, e.g. counties, provinces, states, etc.? DB1729talk 18:51, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We have the formal definition of a populated place from USGS: Cities, towns and other entities with human habitation are classified as populated places in the context of the BGN and GNIS. – The Grid (talk) 17:41, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
