The 1964 Lamar Tech Cardinals football season was the program's first season in the new on–campus Cardinal Stadium now named Provost Umphrey Stadium. The Cardinals and the Southland Conference competed at the NCAA College Division level in 1964. Winning the Southland Conference championship with a 3–0–1 conference record and a 6–3–1 overall record, the Cardinals played in the inaugural Pecan Bowl losing to Northern Iowa by the score of 19–17.[1]
Honors and recognitions
Vernon Glass was named NCAA College Division Coach of the Year for the season.[2]

Glass was also the NCAA College Division Coach of the Year in 1964 and 1965, and he was recognized by the Texas Sports Writers Association as Junior College Coach of the Year in 1959 while he was at Del Mar College.
