A.C. Milan won its first domestic league title since 1979, thanks to a remarkable finish to the season, highlighted by a 3–2 victory away from home to title rivals Napoli a couple of games from the end of the season. The season also saw the entry of Marco van Basten and Ruud Gullit, the Dutch stars setting the tone for Milan's offense in the coming seasons.
