The 1990–91 NBA season was the Hawks' 44th season in the NBA. Under new head coach Bob Weiss, the Hawks got off to a 4–1 start, but lost nine consecutive games afterwards in November. However, they went on to win 15 of their next 18 games including a 7-game winning streak, as they finished fourth in the Central Division with a 43–39 record. In the first round of the playoffs, they would lose to the Detroit Pistons in a full five game series. Following the season, Doc Rivers was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, Spud Webb was dealt to the Sacramento Kings, Moses Malone signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Milwaukee Bucks, and John Battle signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
