42 Persei is a star in the constellation Perseus. Its apparent magnitude is 5.11.[2] Located around 82.30 parsecs (268.4 ly) distant,[1] it is a blue-white main-sequence star of spectral type A3V,[3] a star that is fusing its core hydrogen.
It is an rotating ellipsoidal variable, ranging from magnitude 5.18 to 5.05.[10] It is a spectroscopic binary with a period of 1.76535 days and an eccentricity of 0.056, implying a round orbit. The companion star is likely to be a dim red dwarf.[4]
In Chinese astronomy, 42 Persei is called 天讒, Pinyin: Tiānchán, meaning Celestial Slander, because this star is marking itself and stand alone in Celestial Slander asterism, Hairy Head mansion (see : Chinese constellation).[11]
