500 Startups is an early-stage venture fund and seed accelerator founded by Dave McClure[1][2] and Christine Tsai in 2010.[3][4] The fund admitted a first "class" of twelve startups to its incubator office in Mountain View, California in February, 2011.[5] They expanded to a second class of 21 in June 2011 and a third class of 34 in October 2011.[6][7]
History
As of August 1, 2015, 500 Startups had invested in over 1,200 companies including Eat App[8] Tripoto,[9][10][11] Get Croissant[12]Punchd,[13] Console.FM,[14] CoContest,[15] Contactually,[16] Safe Shepherd,[17] idreambooks, Fileboard, Kraftly,[18] Little Eye Labs, myGengo, ChinaNetCloud,[19] Cucumbertown[20] Visual.ly, E la Carte, Canva,[21][22] Cleanify,[23][24] Udemy,[25][26][27][28] 24/7 Techies,[29][30][31] ZipMatch,[32][33] RidePal,[34][35]Avanoo,[36] and Headout.[37] Of current investments, more than 20% have participated in other incubators, 20-30% are international, and over 60 have been acquired.[38] Some of their successful active companies are CreditKarma,[35] ViralGains,[35] RapidAPI[39] Twilio,[35] GrabTaxi,[35] TalkDesk,[40] and Intercom.io.[35] To date, their biggest exits include $403M acquisition of Makerbot by Stratasys,[41] $350M acquisition of Wildfire by Google,[42] $200M acquisition of Viki by Rakuten,[43] and $117M acquisition of Simple by BBVA.[44]
In 2012, the organization acquired Mexican.VC, an accelerator in Mexico City, expecting to ramp up its investment in Mexico substantially. Through its investment in Alta Ventures, 500 Startups planned have better access to deal-flow in this region.[45]
500 Startups has locations in Silicon Valley, Mexico City, Israel and San Francisco.[46] In 2015, they announced they would be starting a three-month growth program in London, UK[47] as well as a pre-accelerator in Oslo, Norway.[48]
Regional and Vertical Focused Funds
500 Startups has several funds focused on different international regions or operational verticals.
- $22M sized, 500 Durians fund managed by Khailee Ng,[49] focused on the Southeast Asian market.[50]
- $10M sized, 500 Mobile Collective fund managed by Edith Yeung, focused on mobile app startups globally.[51]
- $15M sized, 500 Kimchi fund managed by Tim Chae, focused on the South Korean market.[52][53]
- $15M sized, 500 Nordics fund managed by Sean Percival, focused on the Nordic market.[54]
- $10M sized, 500 TukTuks fund managed by Natavudh “Moo” Pungcharoenpong (CEO of Ookbee) and Ruangroj “Krating” Poonpol (Founder of Disrupt University), focused on the Thailand market.[55]
- $15M sized, 500 Istanbul fund managed by Rina Onur, (co-founder of Peak Games and Hemenkiralik) focused on the Turkish, Turkic market and diaspora.[56][57]
